When an electric storage type water heater is being changed to a tankless type heater, additional information is needed. These devices may impact the electrical system serving the building or neighborhood in a substantial way. These appliances impose a substantial load on the electrical system. The electric utility providers are in the position of understanding the flow of electricity and knowing of the system that is currently in place can handle these loads. Before a permit to install other than small, single point of use, less than 3,000 watt tankless water heater units can be issued, the County will require authorization from the providing electric utility. St Lucie County has been in contact with Florida Power and Light and Fort Pierce Utilities Authority to discuss the impact of these appliances on the electrical grid. The utilities are aware that requests for approval of a tankless heater will be forthcoming and is necessary for the issuance of the permit. By obtaining this approval, you and the electrical grid will be protected. Thank you for your understanding and compliance with this request. For additional information, please contact your electric supplier. This requirement does not apply to gas fired tankless heaters
