Lucie County, Permitting Re: Soil Compaction after placement of Foundation REND--- KSM#: 212429-HBK APR 20 2021 - To Whom It May Concern: ST..Lucie County, Permitting KSM Engineering and Testing(KSM hereinafter)has been requested to perform subsurface testing in order to-determine the degree of compaction of the foundation soils under the existing structure as it has been brought to our attention that the foundation was poured for the above mentioned garage structure without verification of the soil compaction.Representatives from KSM conducted the required exterior subsurface testing on March 31, 2021. . Scope of Compaction test: Since the foundation has been poured prior to the soil compaction testing, KSM is unable -to perform standard compaction tests within the footprint of the structure or under the foundation-. In order not to undermine the existing foundation, KSM technicians selected 4 random locations along the exterior of the structure to dig down adjacent to the foundation. Locations were selected along each side of the structure in areas thus not to affect any landscaping. At this elevation KSM technicians collected a soil sample for the required modified proctor then performed a density reading using a nuclear density gauge against the foundation of the structure:. KSM technicians also used a static cone penetrometer to probe underneath the foundation to determine the soil resistance beneath the foundation. Upon completing the indicated density reading and probe, the location was filled back in with the existing soil. The exterior test locations are selected at random, unless KSM is instructed to perform the tests in certain areas by the Engineer of Record or Builder/Client submitted in writing prior to our visit to the site..With the collected field data, KSM followed the procedures indicated within ASTM D 1557 and ASTM D 6938 to determine the degree of compaction. If interior soil compaction verification or deeper compaction verification is required, please contact our office for a proposal. The visual observations of KSM serve to document or evaluate the condition of the structure or assemblies at the time of the inspection within a reasonable professional engineering probability . and certainty. All conclusions -or recommendations are based upon testing, observations, or information gathered on-site prior to completion of this document. If field conditions change or differ than.as stated in this document, it is the responsibility of all parties to contact KSM for additional review. Conclusions and Recommendations: Please find the attached Soil Compaction Report following this fetter(page 3 of the overall report) indicating the test results of the nuclear density gauge, modified dry proctor and static cone penetrometer readings. Based upon our review of the field collected data and laboratory testing, within a reasonable professional engineering certainty, the compaction of the soils underneath the foundation meets or -exceeds 95.% of the modified dry proctor and the penetrometer readings indicate the soils to be generally firm, thus the soils-are compacted properly within 12" below the foundation bearing elevation within the areas tested.
