Alternate Materials Assessment for
7102 Winter Garden Parkway, Ft Pierce, FL
Prepared For
Integrity Metals (Client)
Background
Client has requested that Timberlake Cove assess alternate materials to be used for
this project, pursuant to FBC 104.11. The project in question is located at 7102 Winter
Garden Parkway in Ft Pierce, and the permit # is 2111-0064. The product in question is
a 24ga nail strip panel, distributed as a metal roofing product under product approval FL
28113.1.
Determine:
Assess proposed use of metal panel under FL 28113.1 when installed as a wall panel
for this project.
Discussion:
FBC 104.11 stipulates that the code is not intended to prevent the installation of a
material provided that the alternative material has been approved by the building official,
given that the alternative complies with the intent of the provisions of the code, and is
equal or better than the prescribed code requirements.
Metal Roof Panel Testing and Material Requirements:
FBC 1504.3.2 requires testing of metal roof panels in accordance with UL 580, ASTM
E1592, or TAS 125. The product in question has been tested under UL 580, as attested
to by the product approval FL 28113.1.
FBC 1507.4.3 requires that aluminum-zinc alloy steel roof panels be ASTM A792 AZ50
or better.
Metal Wall Panel Testing Requirements:
FBC chapter 14 does not prescribe a specific test for metal wall panels. In common
practice, many wall approvals in the state of Florida rely on the same uplift test methods
prescribed for metal roof panels (typically UL 580 or ASTM E1592).
FBC chapter 14 does not prescribe a specific material requirement for aluminum zinc
alloy wall panels.
Metal Roof Panel vs Metal Wall Panel Performance Requirements:
Metal wall panels are subjected to uplift pressures in the same way that metal roof
panels are, albeit at different pressure values for the varying roof and wall zones. A
negative pressure is a negative pressure, whether applied to a vertical wall surface or
an inclined roof surface. Thus, the use of UL 580 or ASTM E1592 to assess
performance under uplift pressure is suitable for both roof and wall panels. Absent a

specific requirement otherwise (e.g. low slope, HVHZ, etc), the FBC does not prescribe
further performance testing for metal roof panels besides uplift pressure testing.
Conclusion:
The product in question has been tested in accordance with the UL 580 standard and
has demonstrated the performance capacity as indicated in the metal roofing Florida
Product Approval FL 28113.1. Furthermore, the FBC does not prescribe a specific test
method for metal wall panels, however, both wall and roof panels must resist uplift wind
pressures. Therefore, since this product has been tested for uplift performance as a
metal roof panel, installation of this product as a metal wall panel meets the intent of the
code provided that the uplift performance indicated is sufficient for the design pressures
required.
Exclusions/Limitations:
This assessment considers only the code requirements for metal roof panels vs metal
wall panels. All other design aspects to be completed by other entities. Timberlake Cove
has not performed any site visits or inspections on this project. Timberlake Cove is not
responsible for any conclusions or interpretations made by others based on this
calculation sheet. Timberlake Cove makes no statement regarding suitability of use and
makes no warranty of performance.
