1. SCOPE OF WORK:
e A. 11 GENERAL: EXPAND EXISTING SILENT KNIGHT FIRE ALARM SYSTEM
TO PROVIDE FIRE SAFETY FUNCTIONS AND NOTIFICATION AT THE
NEW BUILDING.
B. FURNISH, INSTALL AND PROGRAM ALL MATERIAL, LABOR,
DOCUMENTATION AND TESTING REQUIRED TO PROVIDE A FULLY -
FUNCTIONAL, CODE -COMPLIANT OPERATIONAL SYSTEM.
C. PERFORM INITIAL ACCEPTANCE TESTING ON NEW COMPONENTS
AND RE -ACCEPTANCE TESTING OF EXISTING COMPONENTS.
D. PREPARE NEW (OR AMEND EXISTING) OPERATION AND
MAINTENANCE MANUAL FOR OWNER FOR EXPANDED SYSTEM.
INSTRUCT OWNER'S PERSONNEL ON SYSTEM OPERATION.
E. PROVIDE FIRE WATCH WHEN THE FIRE ALARM SYSTEM FUNCTION
IS IMPAIRED FOR FOUR HOURS OR LONGER.
F. INSTALL IN ACCORDANCE WITH APPLICABLE CODES (LISTED
BELOW), NFPA 72, NFPA 70, AND THE CONTRACT DOCUMENTS.
7 G. COORDINATE WITH ALL BUILDING SYSTEMS, INCLUDING
MECHANICAL/HVAC, ELECTRICAL, LIGHTING AND FIRE PROTECTION

PERSONNEL REQURREMENTS AND CERTIFICATIONS
1. INSTALLATION PERSONNEL SHALL BE SUPERVISED BY PERSONS WHO
ARE QUALIFIED AND EXPERIENCED IN THE INSTALLATION, INSPECTION,
AND TESTING OF FIRE ALARM SYSTEMS, EXAMPLES OF QUALIFIED
2 PERSONNEL SHALL INCLUDE, BUT NOT BE LIMITED TO THE FOLLOWING:
1) FACTORY TRAINED AND CERTIFIED PERSONNEL, 2) NATIONAL
I INSTITUTE OF CERTIFICATION IN ENGINEERING TECHNOLOGIES (NICET)
FIRE ALARM LEVEL II OR HIGHER CERTIFIED PERSONNEL, AND 3)
PERSONNEL LICENSED OR CERTIFIED BY STATE OR LOCAL
AUTHORITY, PER NFPA 72. COPIES OF CERTIFICATION CARDS OF
TECHNICIANS SHALL BE FURNISHED TO OWNER'S REPRESENTATIVE.
2. A COPY OF ALL SOFTWARE DOCUMENTATION SHALL BE MAINTAINED
- I ON THE CONSTRUCTION SITE IN A BINDER, ARRANGED IN
CHRONOLOGICAL ORDER. THIS BINDER SHALL BE TURNED OVER TO
OWNER AFTER ALL START UP, TESTING, COMMISSIONING,
PROGRAMMING AND DEMONSTRATIONS ARE COMPLETED.
3. ONCE THE FIRE ALARM SYSTEM IS PUT INTO SERVICE, IN WHOLE OR IN
PART, NO SOFTWARE CHANGES SHALL BE PERFORMED WITHOUT
WRITTEN CONSENT OF OWNER. IF SOFTWARE CHANGES ARE NEEDED,
1 THEY SHALL BE PERFORMED BY CERTIFIED MANUFAC rURER'S
TECHNICIANS.
4. PROVIDE THE SERVICES OF THE INSTALLER'S SUPERVISOR OR
PERSON WITH EQUIVALENT QUALIFICATIONS TO SUPERVISE
INSPECTION AND TESTING, CORRECTION, AND ADJUSTMENTS.
MATERIALS AND INSTALLATION REQUIREMENTS
1. ALL EQUIPMENT CONSTRUCTED AND INSTALLED IN CONFORMITY WITH
THESE DESIGN DOCUMENTS SHALL BE LISTED FOR THE PURPOSE FOR
WHICH IT IS USED AND SHALL BE INSTALLED IN ACCORDANCE WITH
THE MANUFACTURERS' INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS, APPLICABLE
STANDARDS AND DESIGN DOCUMENTS.
2. ALL NEW COMPONENTS SHALL BE FM APPROVED OR UL LISTED FOR
THEIR INTENDED USAGE.
3. ALL NEW FIRE ALARM COMPONENTS SHALL BE BY A SINGLE
MANUFACTURER, EXCEPT THAT SURGE SUPPRESSION, FITTINGS,
WIRING AND WIREWAYS MAY VARY.
4. SURGE SUPPRESSION
A. SURGE SUPPRESSION SHALL BE INSTALLED TO SERVE ALL NEW
FRCP, FARP AND NAC BOOSTER UNITS. SURGE SUPPRESSORS
SHALL NOT BE MOUNTED ON FIRE ALARM PANEL ENCLOSURES.
B. ANY CONDUCTORS ENTERING OR EXITING THE BUILDING SHALL BE
PROTECTED BY APPROVED, LISTED SURGE PROTECTION DEVICES
AND INSTALLED ACCORDING TO THE SURGE PROTECTION DETAIL.
5. MOUNTING LOCATIONS
A. WHERE HORNS (SPEAKERS) AND COMBINATION HORN/STROBE
(SPEAKER/STROBE) APPLIANCES ARE INSTALLED IN THE SAME
ROOM, THEY SHALL BE MOUNTED AT THE SAME ELEVATION WITH
RESPECT TO THE FINISHED FLOOR WHERE NFPA 72 §7.4.7 AND §
7.5.4 MOUNTING REQUIREMENTS HEIGHTS CAN BE SATISFIED.
B. ALL FIRE ALARM SYSTEM DEVICES MUST BE COORDINATED AND
INSTALLED SO AS TO BE SAFELY ACCESSIBLE FOR TESTING,
INSPECTION AND MAINTENANCE.
C. OBTAIN OWNER'S APPROVAL OF LOCATIONS OF DEVICES BEFORE
INSTALLATION.
D. PROVIDE SEMI -FLUSH MOUNTED FIRE ALARM CONTROL PANEL
WHERE INSTALLED IN FINISHED AREAS; IN UNFINISHED AREAS,
SURFACE MOUNTED UNITS ARE ACCEPTABLE. ENCLOSURE
PAINTED WITH A CORROSION PROTECTIVE, HARDENED FINISH. DO
NOT FLUSH -MOUNT IN FIRE-RESITANCE RATED WALLS.
E. NO SMOKE SENSORS SHALL BE LOCATED WITHIN 60 INCHES OF
ANY SUPPLY OR RETURN AIR DUCTS.
6. RACEWAYS AND JUNCTION BOXES
A. ELECTRICAL METALLIC TUBING (EMT) SHALL BE A MINIMUM TRADE
SIZE OF 3/4 INCH, NO RACEWAY MAY EXCEED 40% FILL. PROVIDE
SUPPORT IN ACCORDANCE WITH APPLICABLE CODE. FOR DRY
LOCATIONS NOT SUBJECT TO PHYSICAL DAMAGE: FLEXIBLE METAL
CONDUIT (FMC) OR METAL CLAD (MC) CABLE WITHOUT AN OVERALL
NONMETALLIC COATING MAY BE USED FOR FINAL CONNECTION
WITHIN DUCTS, AIR HANDLING SPACES (PLENUMS) AND TO FIELD
DEVICES. MAXIMUM LENGTH OF FLEX/MC CABLE SHALL NOT
EXCEED 6 FT WITHOUT ENGINEERING APPROVAL.
B. UNDERGROUND RACEWAYS SHALL BE PVC AND NO LESS THAN 1"
SIZE. MINIMUM BURIAL COVER SHALL BE NO LESS THAN 24 INCHES
AND IN COMPLIANCE WITH NFPA 70 §300.5.
C. CONTRACTOR SHALL DOCUMENT ALL CONDUIT & JUNCTION BOXES
'AS -BUILT' WITH PIPE SIZE & CONTENTS ON THE RECORD
DRAWINGS TURNED OVER AT THE END OF THE PROJECT.
D. NEW CONDUIT SYSTEM J-BOX COVERS ARE TO BE PAINTED RED &
PERMANENTLY LABELED ON BOTH SIDES (INTERIOR AND
EXTERIOR) AS "FIRE ALARM SYSTEM". ALL NEW AND EXISTING
CONDUITS LEAVING FACP ARE TO BE PERMANENTLY LABELED WITH
THEIR DESTINATION & CONTENTS.
E. CONCEAL ALL WIRING, CONDUIT, BOXES, AND SUPPORTS WHERE
INSTALLED IN FINISHED AREAS.
F. ALL FIRE ALARM CONDUITS SHALL BE ROUTED SO AS NOT TO
OBSTRUCT THE EGRESS PATHWAYS OR MECHANICAL EQUIPMENT
CLEARANCE.
G. ALL CONDUITS IN COLD STORAGE AREAS, OR THAT PASS FROM
THE INTERIOR TO THE EXTERIOR OF THE BUILDING, SHALL BE
SEALED TO STOP CONDENSATION AS REQUIRED BY NFPA 70
760,3(H) AND 300.7. APPROVED MATERIALS INCLUDE
REFRIGERATION PUTTY, POLYWATER DUCT SEALANT, DUCT SEAL
PUTTY, OR EQUAL.
H. CONDUITS SHALL NOT ENTER THE CONTROL PANEL OR ANY OTHER
COMPONENT PROVIDED EXCEPT WHERE ENTRY IS SPECIFIED BY
THE MANUFACTURER.
I. CONDUIT ENTRY ON ALL EXTERIOR AND/OR WEATHERPROOF
DEVICES SHALL ONLY BE MADE FROM THE BOTTOM OF THE BOX.
J. PROVIDE BUSHINGS AT ALL CONDUIT/EMT ENTRIES INTO
ENCLOSURES.
7. FREE WIRING
A. COMPLY WITH NFPA 70 §760.135. PROVIDE LISTED FPLP (OR CMP)
CABLE UNLESS NOTED OTHERWISE, BELOW. LOCATE TO PROVIDE
MAXIMUM PROTECTION AGAINST PHYISCAL DAMAGE. WHERE
LOCATED EXPOSED WITHIN 7 FT OF THE FLOOR, OR PASSING
THROUGH A WALL WITHIN 7 FT: INSTALL WITHIN EMT.
B, DUCTS FOR ENVIRONMENTAL AIR: FPLP (OR CMP).
C. RISERS PENETRATING ONE OR MORE FLOORS: MAY USE FPLP/FPLR
(CMP/CMR) OR FPL/FPLR/FPLP (CM/CMR/CMP) IN EMT. PROVIDE
LISTED FIRESTOP ASSEMBLIES AT EACH FLOOR OR SHAFTWALL

8. PENETRATIONS
A. ALL PENETRATIONS THROUGH FIRE/SMOKE PARTITIONS SHALL BE
PROVIDED WITH APPROVED FIRESTOPPING, INSTALLED IN
ACCORDANCE WITH A UL LISTED ASSEMBLY,
B. SEAL NEW PENETRATIONS IN FIRE RESISTANCE RATED
ASSEMBLIES WITH LISTED SEALANT SYSTEMS. MINIMUM F-RATING
IS 2 HOURS IN STAIRS & ELEVATOR HOISTWAYS/MACHINERY
SPACES, THROUGH FLOORS OR THROUGH ROOFS; 1 HOUR
ELSEWHERE. PROVIDE LEAKAGE RATED (L-RATED) SEALANT.
FLOOR PENETRATIONS SHALL BE T-RATED EQUAL (OR SUPERIOR)
TO THE F-RATING. PENETRATIONS OF CORRIDOR WALLS AND STAIR
ENCLOSURES SHALL BE SEALED BY SYSTEMS HAVING A L-RATING
OF NOT MORE THAN 5.0 CFM/SF OF PENETRATION OPENING AT 0.30
INCH (WATER GAUGE).
9. PRIMARY POWER - PROVIDE 120-VAC POWER AT 60-HZ FROM A
DEDICATED BRANCH CIRCUIT, IN ACCORDANCE WITH NFPA 70 AND
NFPA 72. ALL FARP, NAC EXPANDER AND FACP UNITS IN THIS SCOPE
OF WORK SHALL BE PROVIDED WITH 120 VAC POWER SUPPLIED FROM
AN APPROVED POWER SOURCE ON DEDICATED CIRCUITS THAT DO
NOT SERVE OTHER FUNCTIONS. MARKED CIRCUIT BREAKERS LOCK-
ONS SHALL BE INSTALLED TO PREVENT INADVERTENT
DISCONNECTION OF THIS EQUIPMENT AND RED IN COLOR.
MATERIALS AND INSTALLATION REQUIREMENTS (CONTINUED)
10. SECONDARY POWER - PROVIDE BATTERY BACKUP FOR 24 HR OF
STANDBY FOLLOWED BY FIVE MINUTES (0,0833 HR) OF ALARM.
11. VOICE SYSTEMS
A, EVERY SPEAKER CIRCUIT AND AMPLIFIER SHALL BE SIZED TO
PROVIDE 25% SPARE CAPACITY OR GREATER WITH RESPECT TO
POWER OUTPUT. FOR CALCULATION, ALL SPEAKERS SHALL BE
CALCULATED TAPPED NOT LESS THAN SHOWN OR: 2 WATTS IN
LARGE MECHANICALL/ELECTRICAL SPACES, 1 WATT IN ASSEMBLY
AREAS AND Yz WATT ELSEWHERE.
B. CONTRACTOR SHALL PROVIDE, INSTALL AND PROGRAM A MINIMUM
OF ONE BACK-UP AMPLIFIER THAT WILL AUTOMATICALLY BECOME
ACTIVE WHEN A PRIMARY AMPLIFIER REPORTS FAILURE AS
DESCRIBED IN NFPA 72 AAA.7.2.1
12. CALCULATIONS
A. BATTERY CALCULATIONS SHALL ASSUME A STARTING VOLTAGE
NOT GREATER THAN 20.4 VOLTS.
B. VOLTAGE DROP CALCULATIONS SHALL UTILIZE THE MAXIMUM
CURRENT FOR EACH DEVICE AT ITS INDICATED OUTPUT.
13, LABELING - PROVIDE LEGIBLE, PERMANENT LABELS FOR EACH
CONTROL DEVICE, USING IDENTIFICATION USED IN OPERATION AND
MAINTENANCE DATA.
14. WIRING
A. ALL CABLE RUNS SHALL BE CONTINUOUS BETWEEN DEVICES,
WITHOUT SPLICES, WHEREVER FEASIBLE. ALL OTHER
CONNECTIONS SHALL BE TO TERMINAL BLOCKS. WIRE NUTS SHAI''_L
NOT BE PERMITTED. WIRES CONNECTED TOGETHER SHALL HAVE
THE SAME COLOR INSULATION. ALL CONNECTIONS SHALL BE
ACCESSIBLE FOR INSPECTION AND SERVICING AND SHALL BE
CLEARLY IDENTIFIED ON THE RECORD DRAWINGS.
B. CONDUCTOR SIZE SHALL NOT BE LESS THAN 18 AWG FOR
INITIATING DEVICES OR SIGNALING LINE CIRCUITS AND 14 AWG FOR
NOTIFICATION APPLIANCE CIRCUITS.
C. NEW WIRING IN WET LOCATIONS, INCLUDING UNDERGROUND,
SHALL BE WET -RATED WIRE,
D. WIRES INSTALLED OR RECONNECTED UNDER THIS SCOPE OF
WORK SHALL BE CLEARLY LABELED FOR FUNCTIONALITY AND
ZONING.
E. WHERE EXISTING CIRCUITS ARE EXTENDED, EXTENSIONS SHALL
MATCH EXISTING IN WIRE TYPE, GAUGE, INSULATION COLOR AND
OUTER JACKET COLOR.
15. BATTERIES
A. BATTERIES SERVING NEW COMPONENTS SHALL BE NEW.
DEMOLISHED OLD BATTERIES SHALL BE RECYCLED BY THE
CONTRACTOR.
B. BATTERIES SHALL BE LEGIBLY AND PERMANENTLY DATED AT TIME
OF INSTALLATION.
16. STROBE SYNCRONIZATION - TWO OR MORE STROBES VISIBLE WITHIN
THE SAME FIELD OF VIEW SHALL BE SYNCHRONIZED. (NOT APPLICABLE
TO SINGLE STROBES USED FOR FIRE SPRINKLER FLOW
ANNUNCIATION).
17. COORDINATION
A, CONTRACTOR SHALT_ COORDINATE WIRE PLACEMENT
COMPATIBILITY REQUIREMENTS FOR CONDUCTORS THAT SHARE
RACEWAYS OR ENCLOSURES. WIRES THAT ARE INCOMPATIBLE
WITH EACH OTHER DUE TO ELECTROMAGNETIC INTERFERENCE OR
OTHER REASONS SHALL BE APPROPRIATELY SEPARATED TO
ELIMINATE OR REDUCE INCOMPATIBILITY TO MANUFACTURER -
SPECIFIED LEVELS.
B. CONTRACTOR SHALL COORDINATE WORK WITH THE OWNER AND
OTHER CONTRACTORS ON SITE TO MINIMIZE DISRUPTION TO
OPERATIONS. WHERE FIRE ALARM COMPONENTS ARE OUT OF
SERVICE FOR FOUR HOURS OR MORE, CONTRACTOR SHALL
NOTIFY THE AHJ AND PROVIDE FIRE WATCH.
INSPECTION AND TESTING REQUIREMENTS
1. THE FIRE ALARM SYSTEM SHALL BE TESTED IN ACCORDANCE WITH
NFPA 72 REQUIREMENTS OF LOCAL AUTHORITIES, INCLUDING UNDER
NORMAL AND STANDBY POWER SUPPLIES AND AS INDICATED ON
PLANS. DOCUMENT EACH INSPECTION AND TEST,
2. PREPARE FOR TESTING BY ENSURING THAT ALL WORK IS COMPLETE
AND CORRECT; PERFORM PRELIMINARY TESTS AS REQUIRED,
3. NOTIFY AUTHORITIES HAVING JURISDICTION AND COMPLY WITH THEIR
REQUIREMENTS FOR SCHEDULING INSPECTIONS AND TESTS AND FOR
OBSERVATION BY THEIR PERSONNEL.
4. PROVIDE COMPLETED RECORD DRAWINGS, COMPLETED NFPA 72
RECORD OF COMPLETION AND COMPLETED NFPA INSPECTION AND
TEST FORM AS REQUIRED 14 DAYS PRIOR TO COMMENCING FINAL
ACCEPTANCE TEST.
5. PROVIDE ALL TOOLS, SOFTWARE, AND SUPPLIES REQUIRED TO
ACCOMPLISH INSPECTION AND TESTING.
6. SYSTEM START UP AND COMMISSIONING SHALL INCLUDE TRIAL
OPERATION OF ALL MAIN AND PERIPHERAL EQUIPMENT AND
SOFTWARE PROGRAMMING OF LOCAL FACP.
7. DUCT SMOKE DETECTORS: PROPER AIR DUCT SENSOR AIR FLOW
SHALL BE DEMONSTRATED USING MANUFACTURER'S APPROVED TEST
EQUIPMENT. DOCUMENTATION OF AIR FLOW VELOCITY SHALL BE
PROVIDED AND SHALL INCLUDE VELOCITY, AIR HANDLER NAME,
SENSOR LOCATION, MANUFACTURER AND MODEL NUMBER OF
TESTING DEVICE, THIS TESTING SHALL BE CONDUCTED AFTER THE AIR
HANDLING SYSTEM'S TESTING AND BALANCING WORK HAS BEEN
COMPLETED.

PROJECT CLOSE-OUT REQUIREMENTS
1. ALL NEW SYSTEM ADDRESS & CIRCUIT INFORMATION SHALL BE ON
RECORD DRAWINGS & ON A DEVICE WIRING LEGEND. THREE COPIES
OF THE LEGEND SHALL BE TURNED OVER W/ RECORD DRAWINGS, A
