Dear St. Lucie County Building Department:
Please find attached the following documents relating to a proposed
ground deck in my backyard.
1. Certified structural engineering drawings of the proposed deck.
2. New survey showing the deck that was 75% built but then found to
be in violation.
3. New survey showing the proposed new deck based on the structural
engineering drawings (at scale.)
4. Old survey - for reference showing that there was a ground deck
that ran all along the seawall. This ground decking was removed
when Wilco redid the seawall in 2017.
5. Copy of Notice of Violation dated January 11, 2022.
By way of background, back in December 2021 1 had landscaping done
in my backyard and hired Beautify Your Yard to do that work. They
advised that they were qualified to do the work and that no permit was
needed to do the detached ground deck. They were obviously wrong
on both counts. I'm now trying to rectify the work that they began that
was stopped on January 7, 2022.
I had stopped into the building department offices in mid -January to find
out what I needed to do and was advised that I needed to get a
structural engineer to provide certified drawings and that I needed a
survey that showed the proposed deck to scale. I'm not sure if it's
related to the pandemic or just everyone's busy workload but it has

taken some time to find a structural engineer and a survey company
and I appreciate that the violations department had given me a two
week extension which I know we're now beyond. I would like to get a
permit to have the deck in violation redone so that it is in compliance
with the structural engineer's drawings and permitted. In addition, to
achieve a larger set back from my neighbors, the proposed new deck
will be setback 10 feet and smaller than the original (violation) version of
the deck.
Also, as shown on the old survey that we provided when Wilco replaced
the seawall in 2017, there was ground decking that ran the entire length
of the seawall and was much larger than what I am proposing.
Please let me know if you need any additional information and thank
you for your help with this!
Sincerely,
Linda Hann
