• INTRODUCTION:
A Gopher Tortoise survey was performed for Mr. Donnie Myers on April 28,
2021 for the property located at 2001, 2115, 2183, and unadressed Keen Rd.,
Ft. Pierce, FL. The walkdown included 4 parcels for a total of 33.41 acres.
METHODS:
A site walkdown was performed on April 28, 2021 by L. Petz. The lots were
walked down in transects spaced as close as five meters (16 feet) apart.
• RESULTS/DISCUSSION:
There were no gopher tortoises or active abandoned burrows found during
the site walkdown. To note: the lots are heavily covered in Australian pine,
Brazilian pepper, woman's tongue tree, and many exotic vegetation species.
Please see attached photographs.
The lots have been historically cleared (please see the attached 2009 aerial)
and also include a large artificially created pond. The lots are heavily
covered in exotic vegetation and does not include appropriate gopher
tortoise forage. The canopy does not allow sufficient light for gopher
tortoise vegetation to occur.
The site walkdown did not identify any active or abandoned burrows or
active gopher tortoise scat or tracks. Please see the attached `Gopher
Tortoise Forage Plants'.
Per Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation, `Gopher Tortoise Permitting
Guidelines Gopherus polyphemus', April 2008 (Revised January 2017)
potential tortoise habitat is defined as those land cover types and soil
associations that are known to support the life history requirements of the
gopher tortoise. These habitats include, but are not limited to, sandhill,
scrub, scrubby flatwoods, pine flatwoods, dry prairie, coastal strand, xeric
hammock, mixed pine -hardwoods, and disturbed habitats on suitably
drained soils. Designation of an area as potential gopher tortoise habitat
does not indicate that the area is currently inhabited by gopher tortoises.
Per FWC gopher tortoises need access to the following for survival:
1) sufficient areas of forage (herbaceous and low -growing plants including
native broadleaf grasses, legumes [bean/pea family], asters, blackberries
and other fruits, prickly pear cactus, and a variety of other non-native
grasses, except cogon grass);
2) sandy, well -drained, open (uncanopied), sunny sites for burrows and
basking;
3) protection from dogs, cats, other exotic predators, human harassment,
and busy roads.
The typical gopher tortoise burrow has a classic halfmoon shaped entrance.
Per FWC, there are three major burrow types: abandoned, inactive, active,
and potentially occupied burrow.
Abandoned burrows: appears unused and dilapidated. The entrance is
partially or completely collapsed, and the burrow is partially or
completely filled with leaves or soil. Recent rains, or recent activity
by livestock or humans, do not appear to be the primary reason for
burrow collapse. There are no trails into the burrow that might
indicate that a tortoise recently passed through the leaf litter or that
a small tortoise is using a dilapidated, adult burrow.
Inactive burrows: show no tortoise tracks or recently excavated soil,
on the floor or mound. The burrow may have vegetation growing on it
or partially covered with fallen leaves.
Active burrow: burrow is in good repair, has the classic half-moon
shaped entrance, and appears to be in use by a tortoise. These
burrows generally have tortoise tracks or plastron scrapes clearly
visible on the burrow floor or on the mound. The burrow floor often
contains loose soil caused by tortoise activity. The burrow mound is
usually clear of vegetation, and it may contain recently excavated soil.
For burrow surveys and tortoise density determination, active
burrows are combined with inactive burrows to create the potentially
occupied classification.
Potentially occupied burrow: this classification combines the active
and inactive categories and, therefore, includes burrows with obvious
signs of use and those with minimal or no obvious sign of use. A
potentially occupied burrow is in good repair and has the classic half-
moon shaped entrance. These burrows may have tortoise tracks or
plastron scrapes clearly visible on the burrow floor or on the mound,
or may have subtle or no tortoise sign. The lack of observable tortoise
signs may be due to weather or season. The burrow floor may contain
loose soil caused by tortoise activity, or it may be hard packed. The
burrow mound may or may not have vegetation growing on it, and it
may be partially covered by fallen leaves.
• SUMMARY:
The lots have been historically cleared and are currently in such a heavy
canopy gopher tortoise forage plants cannot exist. The lots were walked
down on April 28, 2021, and there were no indications found of gopher
tortoises, abandoned burrows, active or inactive burrows, or potentially
occupied burrows.
