TURTLE GLASS
What is commonly referred to
throughout the glass industry as "turtle
glass" is, in short, glass with a visible
light transmittance of 45% or less in the
visible spectrum (400 to 700
nanameteTs),
In March, 1993, the "Model Lighting
Ordinance for Marine Turtle Protection"
was adopted by the Department of
National Resources in Florida and gulf
state municipalities to adopt as a more
binding regulation. In fact, dozens of
local governments up the Atlantic
seaboard are recognizing the need to
adopt the "turtle law", which is aimed
toward the protection of marine turtles
from the adverse impacts of artificial
beach front lighting.
In addition to glass; other- restrictions
within the ordinance include artificial
lighting, coastal construction activities,
motorized vehicle operation, and
campfires within line -of -sight of the
beach. The issue gets complex, as
studies have shown that certain lighting,
such as Iow-pressure sodium vapor
lamps are not seen by -the turtles. The
turtles sight is primarily affected in the
3 80 —.500. nanometer range.
The following table lists PPG glass
products that meet or exceed the
requirements of the marine protection
ordinance.

Turtle Code Compliance
While architects may appreciate the many design and energy -saving
options presented by laminated glass and its low-E and tinting
options, those specifying glazing systems in hurricane zones, should
be aware of the "Turtle Code." These are requirements intended to
aiaxin-ilze protection of sea turtles that nest along the Atlantic and
Gulf Coast beaches from May 1 to October 31 of each year. Sixty
days after eggs are laid, the newborn hatchlings emerge. When they
should head out to sea, the hatchlings, following their inborn
tendency to move in the brightest direction, often become confused
and are attracted back to the bright lights of the shoreline. As a result
a number of local building codes or ordinances require a visible light
transmittance of .45 or less on all new construction windows within
line sight of the beach.
Sincerely,
Shawn Levine
