Multiple Ply 1 3/4" Wide VERSA -LAM' Beams
When using multiple ply 1 3/a" VERSA -LAM® beams to create a wider member, the connection of the
plies is as critical as determining the beam size. When side loaded beams are not connected properly,
the inside plies do not support their share of the load and thus the load carrying capacity of the full
member decreases significantly.
BC CALL® reports show a connection detail for connecting multiple ply 1 3/a" VERSA -LAM® beams. BC
CALC® reports will either show the member having no side loads or the calculated side load. When the
nails shown on the connection detail are not readily available on the job site, the following table may be
used to substitute power driven nails or hand driven nails.
Example: Connection detail on the BC CALC® report shows 16d sinker nails at 12" o.c. As an
alternative, 3" x 0.131" power driven nails can be used at 8" o.c. or 16d common nails can be used at
14" o.c.

on BCI`O / AJS®R Joist Floors
In areas where concrete masonry block is used in the construction of walls, limited job site
space may require the short-term storage of blocks on a BCI®/ AJS® floor. Because of the
significate weight, caution should be used in the block stack placement location and size. The
following guidelines shall be followed.
General Notes
• Limits based upon a normal weight concrete masonry unit (8x8xl6) weight of 37 pounds
( Reinforced Masonry Engineering Handbook, Masonry Institute of America).
• No more than one masonry block stack shall be placed on any joist.
• Limits shown are valid for all series and depths if the specific floor joists are properly sized
for the occupancy design loads.
• BCI® / AJS® joist shall not be spaced greater than 24" on -center. Floor sheathing shall be
designed by the structure's design professional of record and installed properly prior to
block storage.
o The floor shall not be loaded with concrete masonry block for a period longer than three
days.
• Avoid allowing the joists or floor sheathing to get wet before or during loading. Wet wood
may take a permanent set under load in the deflected shape.

The practice of stacking gypsum wallboard on wood floors prior to the installation is common
and necessary to the successful completion of any residential project. Because of the
enormous weight, caution should be used in the placement location and size. The following
guidelines are recommended by Boise Cascade EWP Engineering.
• Gypsum wallboard shall be stacked no higher than 11 inches (22 sheet limit for 1/2"
gypsum board, 17 sheet limit for 5/8" gypsum board).
• Placement of wallboard stacks in the middle of a room is not allowed. Loading in the
middle of the joist span induces greater deflections compared to loads placed near the
joist's supports.
• No more than one gypsum stack shall be placed on a single joist.
• Wallboard stacks shall be oriented with their long dimension perpendicular to the joist
layout direction. In this orientation, more joists are supporting the wallboard.
• The floor shall not be loaded with wallboard for a period longer than 4 weeks.
• Avoid allowing the joists or floor sheathing to get wet while loaded. Wet wood will take a
permanent set, which may be unsightly.

MIT/HIT — Posittve-Angle Nailing (PAN)
PAN is specifically designed for I joists when used with the MIT or
HIT. With PAN, the nail hole material Is not removed, but is formed
to channel and confine the path of the nail at approximately 45•.
PAN minimizes splitting of the flanges while permitting time -saving
nailing from a better angle. See top flange tables on pp. 173-182.
