Exterior wall tie downs
Date: March 22, 2022

This letter is in response to comments from an Inspector concerning the anchoring of
exterior walls.
As observed and discussed with the construction supervisor the wall tie downs for exterior
walls has been upgraded. Please note that the current gravity condition has been
sufficient for the 100 yrs of the house life. However, to bring the anchoring up to current
code the contractor has installed the following system of tie down anchors:
• Simpson HTT5 tie downs with 5/8" dia x 12" all thread rods epoxy embedded 11"
into brick/ concrete at both walls at each corner,
• HTT5 tie downs with 5/8" dia x 12" all thread rods epoxy embedded 11" into brick/
concrete at side of window openings along front and rear walls,
• HTT5 tie downs with 5/8"dia. X 24" all thread rods each side of front door epoxy
embed into concrete foundation.
• Several locations HTT6 tie downs were used in lieu of HTT5 tie down because of
unavailability.
• The garage walls have a typical plate anchored into concrete with 112" embedded
bolt @ 8'-0" o.c. and 1/4"x4" Tapcons between at approximately 32" o.c.
• In addition the studs one sides of masonry fire place to get (3) 1/4"x4" Tapcons into
masonry.
In conclusion, I find the tie down anchoring of the exterior walls to be acceptable to meet
code requirements at this location.
