RE: Alternate, Foundation Design for Carolina Carport Structure
703 Ulrich Road
Fort Pierce, Florida
Permit No. 170M618
The following is in response to your inquiry regarding the use of.a uniform 4 thick slab in lieu of
the monolithic slab section shown on the plans for support of the 20' x. 25' x 10, -tall. enclosed
Carolina, Carport structure ,at the above referenced site: Reportedly; the base rails of the building.
will be inset approximately 3 feet from the edge of the slab. Provided that the.slab has a minimum
28-day compressive strength of 2,500 psi and minimum uniform thickness of 4 inches is provided,
.and that base' rails are anchored to the slab adjacent 'to each post as per the plans-, the alternate
uniform, 4",slab. thickness is acceptable,. and in the opinion of the undersigned Engineer, will be
sufficient to: provide adequate' foundation support and wind uplift, resistence of the proposed
improvements, and .to meet the wind load requirements .of Section 1609 of the Florida Building
Code,Fifth Edition(2014) and. Chapter 30 of ASCE 7-10.
Note that shallow slab embedment of this nature .can increase the .potential for foundation
settlement and for loss of support due to erosion, . It: is therefore -.recommended 'that..the slab
subgrade soils be firm and unyielding. Additionally, theperimeter soils should be graded such that
Surface drainage away from the building is provided, and should be vegetated or otherwise
stabilized to minimize: potential for erosion adjacent to the slab..:
