Re: Removing the Fin/Flange of PGT Vinyl/Aluminum Frame Products for Equal Leg
Applications
To Whom It May Concern:
Removal of the fin and/or flange does not reduce the structural integrity of the window framing.
Windows with removed fins or flanges, provided that the product is otherwise installed through
the frame as specified in the applicable Miami -Dade NOA, Florida Product Approval or test
report for flange products, will structurally meet the design pressures specified in the
appropriate documents previously mentioned.
One caveat of removing the fin or flange is that they are typically the primary water seal
between the product and the opening. Removal of them requires the installer to properly seal
the window against water infiltration in some other fashion, not determined or tested by PGT.
Caulk fillets, backer rods, or other sealing means determined by other than PGT may be
required to properly meet the water resistance requirements specified in the Florida Building
Code.
Sincerely,
PGT Code Compliance
