HomeMy WebLinkAbout99090151- LETTER TO ST LUCIE DEPT PERMITS & INSPECTIONSBOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS April 25, 2000 Mr. Ken Cotton 209 W. Arbor Ave. Port St. Lucie, FL 34952 Dear Mr. Cotton, Bye COMMUNITY wele`"f4°'EVELOPMENT DIRECTOR JULIA SHEWCHUK I am writing, in response to our telephone conversation, regarding your difficulty finding trees 'to meet the minimum St. Lucie County Code requirements. As per Section 7.09.03 (E) of the St. Lucie County Land Development Code, trees need to measure a minimum of twelve feet in height, two and one-half inches dbh (diameter measured at four and one- half feet up the trunk), and a five-foot crown spread. Section 7.09.04 I. of the St. Lucie County Land Development Code, states that one tree must be planted or preserved for every 2,500 square feet of property. Therefore your site, measuring 15,532 square feet, requires six trees. I called all of the retail nurseries listed in the phone book yellow pages and only found one nursery, Ed Miller & Sons (287-8000), that had only Live Oaks measuring this size. We had discussed the concern that that planting all Live Oaks on your site would not be wise. There will not be enough room for six Live Oaks to mature in a healthy fashion with the home, drive, swale and other improvements on the property. I would recommend mixing Live Oaks with smaller species such as East Palatka Holly, Drake Elm, Crepe Myrtles, and or Wax Myrtles. None of the local nurseries carried these tree species in the required code sizes. In this case I recommend using, several (2 or 3) of the Live Oaks from Miller's Nursery and finding the largest possible sizes of the other recommended species. Another possibility would be to mix in some Cabbage Palms. Cabbage Palms need to be planted in clusters of three to count as one tree requirement. Please provide me with written quotes from the different local nurseries explaining their largest stock available. Contact me when you have installed the trees and I will make a final inspection of your site. I hope this helps to simplify your situation. Please contact me if you have any further questions.
