Items to be removed or cleared shall be burned or removed form project site. Location of dump and length of haul shall be responsibility of Contractor. On -site burying of removed or cleared items shall be prohibited. B. On -site burning of combustible waste material shall be permitted only when consistent with prevailing law and regulation. 1. Burning site shall be a minimum of 100 feet from perimeter of limits of clearing and from selective clearing areas. 2. Adequate fire fighting equipment and personnel shall be in attendance at all times during burning operations. 3. Trees, plant material or other property damaged by Contractors burning operations shall be replaced or repaired by Contractor at his own expense. 5. STANDARD CLEARING AND GRUBBING: A. Standard clearing and grubbing shall be accomplished within the areas designated by boundaries identified as limits of clearing. B. Standard clearing and grubbing shall consist of the complete removal and disposal of all trees, sod, scrub, brush, roots, stumps, rubbish, debris and obstructions resting on or protruding through the surface of the existing ground. 6. ROOT REMOVAL: A. Tree, plant and stumps to be removed shall have entire root system removed in area of paving. Root systems shall be removed to depth of one foot below existing surface in all remaining areas. 7. REMOVAL OF CONSTRUCTED ITEMS: A. Remove and dispose of all constructed items as may be indicated on Drawings. 8. CLEAN-UP: A. As work is completed, Contractor shall immediately remove and dispose of all cleared materials and shall leave all driveways, sidewalks, and other areas free, clear and in good order. 9. TREE AND PLANT PROTECTION: A. Provide protection for all existing trees and plants which drawings do not indicate to be removed. 10. PROTECTION REQUIREMENTS:. A. Vehicle and equipment traffic shall not be permitted under area of branch spread. B. Temporary buildings and material or equipment storage shall not be permitted within area of branch spread. C. Interfering branches shall be removed to a distance of 3' from horizontal and vertical building surfaces. Branches which overhang drives, roads and parking areas shall be removed to a clear height of 14' above finished grade. 1. Branches shall be undercut prior to making the severing top cut. 2. Branches which have been cut shall have ends treated with black pruning paint on day of cut. D. Interfering tree roots of 1" diameter or larger shall be cut back 12" from face of embankments, pipes, footings, and other construction items which are to be placed below grade. 1. Root ends shall be painted with black pruning paint and enclosed in roofing felt for 6". Roofing felt shall be securely wired to root. E. New minor scars shall be treated with black pruning paint on day of damage. 11. RESPONSIBILITY: A. It shall be the responsibility of the Contractor to provide the physical and/or management measures required to protect trees and plants from damage. B. Damaged trees and/or plants shall be repaired or replaced at Contractor's expense. EARTHWORK 1. SCOPE: A. Any and all water damage shall be promptly repaired by Contractor at his expense. 9. SHORING AND SHEETING: A. Excavations shall be shored, sheeted and braced as necessary to accomplish the work in a -safe, efficient manner and/or to protect existing construction. Construction of shoring shall be in accordance with all applicable federal, state, and local regulatory agency requirements. Contractor shall be responsible for all damage to persons or property resulting from the omission of necessary shoring, sheeting and bracing. B. Sheeting for pipe lines shall not be driven below the .elevation of the top of the pipe. If it is necessary to drive the sheeting below that elevation to obtain satisfactory working conditions, the sheeting shall be cut off above the top of the pipe. C. Sheeting and bracing shall be removed as the excavation is refilled in such a manner as to avoid caving in the bank or disturbance to adjacent areas or structures. - The voids left by removal of the sheeting shall be carefully filled by ramming or as otherwise approved by Engineer. D. If condition requires, Contractor shall leave in place any or all sheeting for the purpose of preventing injury to structures, property or persons. If left in place, such sheeting shall' be cut off at least twenty- four (24) inches below the final grade elevation.:. Bracing left in place shall be driven up tight prior to backfilling the excavation. E. All sheeting or bracing left in place shall not be backfilled without inspection of the Engineer. 10. TOPSOIL STRIPPING: A. All limits of clearing areas for asphaltic paving as shown on Drawings shall be stripped as follows: 1. Entire areas designated above .shall be stripped three (3) to four (4) inches below existing grade to remove .grass, vegetation, .roots and organic matter. 2. Where necessary continue stripping to depth required to remove all organic material and other material foreign to soil. B. All areas which require regrading; (cut or fill), upon which no additional construction shall be placed, shall be stripped as follows:, 1. Entire area shall-bestripped of vegetation and organic topsoil, except under branch spread of trees to remain. C, Topsoil free from grass, organic material and debris shall be stockpiled on :site for use as top layer fill for finish lawn areas. Stripped material unsuitable for this use shall be removed from site. 11. EXCAVATIONS: A. Excavations shall be true to line and grade indicated on Drawings and shall conform to following: 1. Excavation shall include removal of all materials of every descrJoWn. 2. Excavated material which is unsuitable or unneeded for fills and backfills shall be removed from the site. 3. The trench bottom shall be firm and compact before laying pipe. 2. Joints shall be closed tight the full circumference of the pipe using the proper gaskets. No joints shall be without gaskets as supplied by the pipe manufacturer. Wrap all pipe joints with filter cloth, MIRAF7 or approved equal, per FOOT Index 280. 3. The pipe shall be laid true to line and grade. 4. inlets shall be set on a firm, well compacted soil base, true to line and grade. Inlets shall be square with curbs, centerlines of pavement or other construction ae intended by the Drawings. 5. Grates on inlets shgil be firmly seated and uniformly supported an the inlets. 6. Sand -cement endwalls shall be laid true to lifts and grade in a workmanlike manner, breaking joints in courses to provide stability to the endwall. Size of the endwalls is specified in the Florida Department of Transportation Standard Details, 7. Dewatering of all trenches and excavations is required prior to laying pipe or setting inlets and/or appurtenances. 8. Shoring, sheeting backfilling, compaction and dewotering is specified in Earthwork. 9. The Contractor shall provide to the Engineer for review five (5) sets of submittals for all structures, pipe ...etc. The Contractor shall review and stamp all submittals prior to delivery to the Engineer. CONCRETE CURB 1. SCOPE: The Work specified in this section consists of the construction of concrete curb as specified and/or detailed on the drawings. The Contractor shall fumish all materials, labor, equipment, tools and any other incidentals necessary for the construction, including clean up. Materials and construction shall comply with F.D.O.T. specifications Section 520. 2. MATERIALS: Concrete shall be Class I, with a minimum 28-day compressive strength of 2500 psi. Expansion joints material: Reflex as manufactured by JD Russell Co. 3. EXCAVATION AND COMPACTION: Excavation shall be the required depth, and the foundation material upon which the concrete curb is to be constructed must be compacted to 98% maximum density in the top 12". 4. JOINTS: Control joints shall be sawed as soon as the concrete has hardened to the degree that excessive raveling will not occur and before uncontrolled shrinkage cracking begins. Contraction joints shall be spaced at intervals of twenty feet except where a lesser interval is required for closure, but no section shall be less than four feet in length. Expansion Joints shall be constructed at all inlets, at all radius points and at other locations indicated on the plans. The joint shall be 1/2 inch in width. 5. FINISHING: All exposed surfaces shall be given a finish while the concrete is still green. In general, only a brush finish will be required. For any surface areas, however, which are too rough or where other surface defects make additional finishing necessary, the Engineer may require that the curb be rubbed to a smooth surface. ASPHALTIC PAVEMENT 1. SCOPE: A. Work includes furnishing all equipment, labor and materials to construct sub -base, base, asphaltic concrete wearing surface, pavement striping, and concrete parking stops, for roads and parking as shown on the Drawings and specified herein. B. Related work specified elsewhere: 1. Excavation, backfill and compaction shall comply with requirements of Earthwork. 2. Tree and plant protection shall comply with requirements of Tree and Plant Protection. 2. BENCH MARKS AND MONUMENTS: A. Maintain careful) all bench marks her y ,monuments and of reference points. If disturbed or destroyed, replace as directed. 3. SURVEY: A. Horizontal control and spot elevation checks by an independent surveyor may be made as directed by the Engineer to determine conformance with the Contract Documents. B. Initial survey checks shall be paid for by the Owner. Any, rechecking required due to nonconformance shall be paid for by the Contractor. 4. DENSITY TESTS: A. Field density control tests shall be made as directed by the Engineer to determine conformance with these specifications. Tests shall be performed by a qualified testing laboratory. The Owner will pay for tests. S. Contractor shall provide the Engineer with test results at all areas and levels where compaction is specified. Tests shall be provided for each 2,000 square feet of area of subgrade and each 5,000 sq. ft. of base, or as directed by the Engineer. 5. MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT: A. Sub -base stabilization material shall meet the current Specifications of the Florida Department of Transportation. B. Limerock or cemented coquina base shall meet the current Specifications of the Florida Department of Transportation. C. Asphaltic concrete wearing surface materials shall meet the current Specifications of the Florida Department of Transportation. D. Equipment for all work to prepare sub -base, base, and wearing surface shall meet the current Specifications of the Flori da da Department of Transportation. 6. CONSTRUCTION AND WORKMANSHIP: A. Sub -base: 1. The sub -grade shall be properly and uniformly graded to true line and grade before placing sub- base stabilizing material. 2. Sub -base material shall be spread evenly over the entire sub -grade before mixing commences. Type "C" stabilization is to be used. 3. The Florida Bearing Value of 75 pounds per square inch shall be required. 4. Mixing shall be accomplished by rotary tillers and shall be required over the entire surface regardless of whether the existing soils have the required bearing value. 5. Compaction shall be at the optimum moisture content and the required density is 95% of maximum density as determined by the current AASHO Specifications. 6. The completed sub -base shall be uniformly graded, true to line, grade and cross-section as shown on the Drawings. 7. The sub -base shall be maintained in good condition, free from ruts, depressions and damage resulting from hauling and handling materials. RecompacUon will be required of loose damaged areas. B. LIMEROCK BASE: (CEMENTED COQUINA MAY BE SUBSTITUTED FOR LIMEROCK) 1. The sub -base shall be true to line, grade and cross section at the time of placing the limerock material. 2. The limerock material shall be supplied from a certified commercial supplier of material meeting Florida Department of Transportation requirements. 3. Base material shall be uniformly spread to the proper depth to result in a compacted depth as specified herein. 4. When compacted base thickness is greater than 6 inches, it shall be constructed in two courses of equal depth. 5. For single course base, after spreading Is completed the entire surface shall be scarified and then shaped to the required line, grade and cross-section after compaction. 6. If coquina base is used, provide certification from the supplier to verify compliance with FOOT specs. 7. For double course base, the tower course shall be completed, compacted and shaped to a cross-section parallel to the finished base. Density Tests shall then be taken and the lower course determined acceptable before spreading the upper course. 8. After constructing the upper course, the base course shall be tested for compaction of 98% maximum density as determined by AASHO T-180. C. SURFACE COURSE: 1. The base shall be checked for compliance with true alignment, grade and cross-section before commencing with the wearing surface placement. 2. The wearing surface shall be Type S asphaltic concrete. 3. The surface of the base shall be cleaned with a proper broom prior to laying the surface course. 4. A tack coat shall be applied to the base surface. 5. All structures which will be in contact with the surface course, shall be painted with an asphalt cement sealer to provide a water tight joint. Care shall be taken that the sealer material is not spread or spilled on surface above the line of the wearing surface. 6. Rolling with a tandem roller, 8 to 12 tons will follow as close behind the surface spreader as possible. Rolling with pneumatic tired rollers, following close behind the seal rolling, will be accomplished with the roller covering every portion of the surface with at least five passes. Final rolling with the 8 to 12 ton roller shall follow before pavement temperature drops below 104 F. Rolling procedure and speed to be as specified in the Florida Department of Transportation Specifications. D. STRIPING: 1. Pavement striping and markings shall be as shown on the Drawings and done in accordance with current Specifications of the Florida Department of Transportation. 2. Striping paint for the roads shall be white, reflectorized as specified in the Florida Department of Transportation Specifications 971- 12. 3. Striping for parking areas shall be white, non- reflectorized as specified in the Florida Department of Transportation Specifications. CONCRETE WALKS & SLABS 1. SCOPE: The Work consists of construction of concrete sidewalks, in accordance with these specifications, and in conformity with the lines, grades, dimensions and notes shown in the plans and in compliance with F.D.O.T. specifications Section 520. 2. MATERIALS: Concrete shall be Class i, with a minimum 28-Day compressive compressive strength of 3000 psi. 3. FOUNDATION: Foundation shall be compacted to 98% maximum density in the top 12" to a firm even surface true to grade and cross-section, and shall be moist at the time that the concrete is placed. 4. FORMS: Forms to be standard wood or metal sidewalk forms. They shall be firmly set and unyielding so that the lines of the sidewalk will be true in alignment and grade. 5. JOINT: Construction joints to be of the open type. After the sidewalk has been finished over the joint, the slot shall be edged with a tool having a 1/2 inch radius. G. FINISHING: The concrete shall be struck -off by means of a wood or metal screen, used perpendicular to the forms, in order to obtain the required grade. The surface shall be given a broom finish. The surface variations shall not be more than 1/8 inch on a five foot transverse section. The edges of the sidewalk shall be carefully finished with an edging tool having a radius of 1/2 inch. 7. CURING: The concrete shall be continuously cured for a period of at least 72 hours. Curing shall be commenced after finishing has been completed and as soon as the concrete has hardened sufficiently to permit application of curing material without marring. Curing may be done by any of the following methods. Wet burlap, membrane curing compound, or polyethylene sheeting. The latest edition of the Florida Department of Transportation Standards Specifications for road and bridge construction will be followed for curing specifications for the above methods. 8. CLEANUP: Prior to final inspection by the Engineer, the Contractor shall remove all debris, trash, and cleared material from the site. The site will be left in a clean and neat condition. CONCRETE PAVEMENT PRODUCT: 3,000 PSI Concrete 0 28 days 6" Minimum Thickness. SU13GRADE: Remove all unsuitable material. Grade uniformly and compact the top 12" to 98% maximum density per AASTHO T-180. Subgrade material shall be free -draining with a minimum of 10% passing the No. 200 sieve. JOINTS: Width of joints formed or sawed to be 3/8" wide, approximately 1" deep. Spacing of joints to be 18 maximum each direction. Saw joints while concrete is still "green". FINISH AND CURING: Coarse broom finish all surfaces, tool all exposed edges prior to brooming. Apply curing compound in accordance with the Manufacturers requirements.
