Comparison - Weight of Roofing Materials
Per your request, I have investigated the comparable weight of Boral coated
steel Barrel. Vault roof shingles compared to industry standard cedar shakes.
Per IC ES Evaluation Report #ESR 1491, the weight of a single coated 26
gage steel Barrel Vault the is 5.78 pounds. Net coverage of the shingle is 14" x
42" or 4.08 square feet yielding a material weight of 1.42 PSF'or 142 pounds per
100 square feet. An internet search resulted in the following information:
Hand -split shakes have two grades: Premium (all edge grain) and Grade
1 (up to 20 percent of the shakes can be flat grain, which is more
susceptible to curling) .
Taper -sawn shakes are as thick as hand -split shakes and are sawn
smooth on both sides. They come in three grades: Premium and Grades
1 and 2.
Average dry weight per square: 160 to 320 lbs.
Average wet weight per square: 320 to 560 lbs.
Additionally, the added weight of 5/8" CDX plywood of 50# per 4' x 8' sheet or 1.05
psf over existing 1x6 spaced sheathing would equal a total of 246 pounds per 100
square feet .
Therefore, the proposed metal Barrel Vault tile with the added 5/8" CDX sheathing is
lighter t any cedar shake roof. If there are any questions regarding this evaluation,
pleas 5cct me as listed above.
