REPLACE BEAM AT 7961 SADDLEBROOK DRIVE
PROPOSEDIMPROVEMENTLOCATION:
Address: 7961 Saddlebrook Drive, Port Saint Lucie, FL 34986
• Tax ID:3321-502-0025-000-7
• Site Plan Name: Sable Creek Phase II,
• Lot: 76
• Project Name: Replace Porch Support Beam
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF WORK:
• This project will replace the existing wood beam above the back porch with a
steel wide flange beam. The existing microlam beam was water damaged.
There are no changes to the size, architectural, or structural features of the
porch.
PROJECT NEED:
• In February, 2019, during implementation of a curtain shutter by O'Donnells
Storm Protection Company (separate permit), the beam was noted to have
potential damage.
• The stucco was removed to identify the issue and it was found that there was
water intrusion, presumably from the gutter above, that damaged the microlam
wood beam.

REPLACE BEAM AT 7961 SADDLEBROOK DRIVE
GENERAL NOTES:
1. The purpose of this design is to facilitate replacement of a beam that supports
the roof above the back porch that suffered some rain ingress, apparently from
the screen gutter (the gutters were resealed in 2017).
2. This design is for use at 7961 Saddlebrook Drive, Port Saint Lucie, FL, 34986
only.
3. The scope of the project is to remove the existing water damaged microlam
beam and replace it with a steel wide -flange beam. The exterior stucco will be
replaced as necessary to restore to the existing house construction.
4. Care shall be taken to shore the existing roof prior to removal of any portion of
the beam.
5. Additional stucco material removal may be required to correct any water
damaged area.
6. After reinstallation of the beam, install metal wire lath around the beam and any
location of soffit that was removed.
7. Once beam is inspected, O'Donnells Storm Protection company can finish
installation of the curtain shutter in accordance with their currently open Building
Permit.
8. Apply''/" of Masonry Stucco around the beam and any location of soffit that was
removed.
9. Paint after the stucco has cured for 30 days.

STRUCTURAL NOTES:
1. Once the existing beam is removed, inspect existing rafters and double up if there is water
damage to them. Replace any wall sheathing that may be damaged.
2. Maintain the existing (Mitek) NFM45 Masonry over -wall beam hanger. If there is insufficient
room to maneuver the new wide flange into position, the carbon steel hanger can be cut and
restored with a Full Penetration (FP) weld.
3. Install 2 x 6 Pressure treated plate above the beam and prepare the beam for the plate below
and 2 x 6, 2 x 10 to the sides of the beam. Use 3/8" Machine Screws with nuts. Bolts on
Flanges and webs to be 2'- 0" OC and staggered so that none of the holes on the flange or on
the web are aligned (Reference Figures 1, 2, and 3).
4. Install the beam using a hydraulic lift. Adequate precautions shall be taken for personnel safety
since the beam will weigh approximately 340 pounds.
5. Use 2 - 16d common nails to attach each existing roof rafter to the new beam plate.
6. Reinstall the existing hurricane tiedown anchors to the new beam.
7. Install 2 bumper plates and expansion anchor per Figure 4, each end of beam.
8. Install blocking on either side of the Wide Flange web as shown and secure with 3/8" bolts.
9. Install W pressure treated plywood sheathing (or board) on both sides of the beam and any
area that was removed for the soffit. Apply 2 layers of 15# felt over the new plywood.
10. Install a 514 X 6 Pressure Treated Board on the outside of the beam to allow solid mounting of a
hurricane curtain shutter (or stucco) to be installed by O'Donnell Shutter (note they have a
separate permit for that work). The shutter support angle will be anchored through the siding
into the 2 x 6 with blocking behind.
