The Sands are classified as Town Houses and therefore review and inspections are
not required by the Fire Prevention Bureau of the St. Lucie County Fire District.
Compliance to the requirements of the Standard Building Code and N.F.P.A. "Life
Safety Code" 101 is required.
Smoke Detection: Standard Building Code Chapter 905.2
905.2.1 An approved single -station or multiple -station smoke detectors shall be
installed in accordance with NFPA 72 within every dwelling and every dwelling unit
within an apartment house. condominium or townhouse, and every guest room in a
motel, hotel or dormitory. Where more than one detector is required to be installed
within an individual dwelling unit, the detectors shall be installed in such a manner that
actuation of one alarm will actuate all of the alarms in the individual unit.
905.2.2 In dwellings and dwelling units, a smoke detector shall be mounted on
the ceiling or wall at a point centrally located in the corridor or area giving access to
each group of sleeping rooms used for sleeping purposes. Where the dwelling unit
contains more than one story, detectors are required on each story including
basements, but not including uninhabitable attics, and shall be located in close
proximity to the stairway leading to the floor above.

an AC electrical power source and shall be equipped with a monitored battery backup
in all new construction.

NFPA 101 - 18-3.4.4.1 A approved single -station or multiple -station smoke detector
continuously powered from the building electrical system shall be installed in every
living unit within every apartment building ( Condominium) regardless of the number of
stories or the number of apartments. When activated, the detector shall initiate an
alarm that is audible in the sleeping rooms of that unit. (clearly audible throughout the
living unit over the backgroung noise levels with all intervening doors closed.).
NFPA 101-18-3.4.4.2. Approved single station smoke detectors shall be installed in
accordance with 7-6.2.9 in every sleeping room. When activated, the detectors shall
initiate an alarm in that sleeping room.
Under the requirements of both the Standard Building Code and the Life Safety Code,
NFPA 10. smoke detection will be required as follows.
1. Install interconnected smoke detectors at the top and bottom of the
stairway. If one unit sounds an alarm both detectors shall sound an alarm.
These detectors shall be connected to the building electrical system and be
equipped with a batter back up.
2. Install a single station smoke detector in each room used for sleeping
purposes. Sleeping room detectors shall only be connected to the building
electrical system. A battery back up system is not required.
This installation shall satisfy both codes.
