Re: 120-Ft Self Support Tower CON
St. Lucie County, FL
FILE
Dear Building Official:
It is understood that Expert Construction Managers is proposing to construct a 120-ft self
support pole for this site.
The tower will be designed in accordance with the 2004 Florida Building Code (FBC)
and the Telecommunications Industry Association Standard TIA/EIA-222-F standard.
The basic wind speed is a design wind velocity, which means that the tower will safely
withstand the fall design wind velocity and still maintain an additional load capacity
known as a "Safety Factor." The safety factors used to design communication poles are
the same factors used in building design. A safety factor of 1.25 is specified by the
American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) and a factor of 1.3 is specified by the
American Concrete Institute (ACI). These safety factors are incorporated into both the
pole and foundation design. A 1.25 safety factor means that the pole would have to be
subject to 25% more load (than the design load) before failure would theoretically occur.
This tower was designed with the top 40-ft meeting the design wind criteria, while the
lower 80-ft of the pole and anchor rods will be over -designed to resist more than the
design wind loads. When steel becomes overstressed it does not suddenly break, it will
bend and buckle. In the unlikely event that this pole would experience a wind event that
would cause a collapse, the upper portion of the pole would become overstressed first and
would buckle. The upper portion of the tower would then double over and hang from this
level or, at worst, break off resulting in a fall radius of approximately 40-ft. Once the
upper portion is no longer upright catching the full force of the wind, the stresses in the
lower portion of the pole are reduced, making a further collapse of the tower unlikely.
