PIPING INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
GENERAL
THE FOLLOWING INSTRUCTIONS ARE FURNISHED AS A GUIDELINE. INSTALLATION
SHALL BE BY PROPERLY TRAINED PERSONNEL AND SHALL STRICTLY FOLLOW THE
PIPE MANUFACTURER'S INSTRUCTIONS.
PREPARATION AND ASSEMBLY -
A. PIPE PREPARATION
CUT OFF FACTORY SPIGOTS AND COUPLINGS AS NEEDED. COUPLINGS MAY
BE NEEDED FOR MAKING CONTAINMENT PIPE SIZE REDUCTIONS OR
STRAIGHT PIPE RUNS. SPIGOTS MAY IfE NEEDED FOR PIPE RUNS OR FOR
MAKING A CONTAINMENT SUMP CONNECTION.
THE ENDS OF THE CONTAINMENT PIPE MUST BE MACHINED OR
THOROUGHLY SANDED FOR A LENGTH OF AT LEAST 3 3/4". ANY SURFACE
IRREGULARITIES MUST BE REMOVED. THIS IS MOST EASILY ACCOMPLISHED
BY USING A SMITH FIBERGLASS PRODUCTS SECONDARY CONTAINMENT
SCARFING ADAPTER KIT. THIS KIT CONSISTS OF A SPECIAL BLADE (3 3/4"
LONG), BLUE BLADE HOLDER, AND 3" & 4" GAUGES WHICH ARE REQUIRED
TO SET THE TOOL. THE KIT IS EASILY ADAPTED TO THE 2"-6" SMITH
FIBERGLASS PRODUCTS STANDARD TAPERING TOOL.
AN ALTERNATE METHOD OF PIPE END PREPARATION IS SANDING WITH
40-60 GRIT SANDPAPER TO REMOVE ALL SURFACE GLOSS. BELT SANDERS
OR A COARSE CUT FLAT FILE MAY BE USED. THE SANDED LENGTH MUST
BE A MINIMUM OF 3 3/4".
B. PIPE ASSEMBLY
THE CONTAINMENT PIPE MUST BE POSITIONED OVER THE PRODUCT PIPE
PRIOR TO BONDING OF THE PRODUCT PIPE, AFTER TESTING OF THE
PRODUCT PIPE, THE CONTAINMENT FITTINGS SHOULD BE INSTALLED AND THE
CONTAINMENT SYSTEM TESTED.
TYPICALLY, THE LENGTH OF THE CONTAINMENT SYSTEM IS DETERMINED

C. FITTINGS ASSEMBLY
ALL CONTAINMENT FITTINGS CONSIST OF TWO HALVES WITH FLANGED TABS.
FITTINGS ARE ASSEMBLED WITH 1/4" - 20 NC HEX HEAD BOLTS ALONG
WITH SMITH FIBERGLASS PRODUCTS ADHESIVE. (NOTE: FITTINGS ARE
SUPPLIED BY SMITH FIBERGLASS PRODUCTS WITHOUT HARDWARE.) THE
FITTING BONDING SURFACES ARE PRE -SANDED IN THE FACTORY. TWO-
PIECE SECONDARY CONTAINMENT FITTINGS MUST BE BONDED WITH A
GREATER AMOUNT OF ADHESIVE THAN IS NORMALLY USED WITH THE BELL
AND SPIGOT JOINTS OF PRODUCT PIPING.

FILLER MUST BE ADDED TO THICKEN THE ADHESIVE. THE FILLER IS
PACKAGED IN PREMEASURED QUANTITIES FOR USE WITH ADHESIVE KITS,
FILLER SHOULD BE ADDED IN THREE STEPS, THOROUGHLY MIXING BETWEEN
ADDITIONS. ALL OF THE FILLER IN THE BAG SHOULD BE USED. NOTE:
ADHESIVE AND HARDENER MUST BE THOROUGHLY MIXED BEFORE ADDING
THE FILLER.
AFTER CLEANING ALL SANDED SURFACES WITH THE CLEANER SUPPLIED IN
THE ADHESIVE KIT, APPLY A THICK COATING (1/16" MINIMUM) OF ADHESIVE
TO THE SOCKET (BELL) AREA OF THE FITTING. LIBERALLY COAT THE TABS
(FLAT BONDING SURFACES) OF BOTH HALVES OF THE FITTINGS WITH
ADHESIVE (1/16" MINIMUM THICKNESS). NEXT, APPLY A THICK
COATING (1/16" MINIMUM) OF ADHESIVE TO THE SANDED SURFACES
OF THE PIPE ENDS.

USE THE BOLTS, NUTS AND WASHERS TO ASSEMBLE THE FITTINGS ON THE
PIPE. TWO 7/16" WRENCHES ARE REQUIRED FOR THE BOLTS. NOTE THAT
A FLAT WASHER IS REQUIRED ON BOTH HALVES OF THE FITTINGS. TIGHTEN
THE NUTS AND BOLTS COMPLETELY. A VARIABLE TORQUE IMPACT WRENCH
WILL GREATLY INCREASE THE EFFICIENCY OF THIS OPERATION.
MAKE SURE THAT ADHESIVE FILLS ANY GAPS BETWEEN PIPE ENDS AND
FITTING SOCKETS.
CARE SHOULD BE TAKEN NOT TO DISTURB A COMPLETED CONTAINMENT
PIPING JOINT WHEN ASSEMBLING ADDITIONAL JOINTS. THE ADHESIVE MUST
BE FULLY CURED BEFORE APPLYING STRESS TO ASSEMBLED JOINTS.
PRECAUTIONS:
1. AVOID CONTACT WITH THE ADHESIVE AND HARDENER SINCE
THEY ARE CAPABLE OF CAUSING SKIN AND EYE IRRITATIONS.
GLOVES AND EYE PROTECTION ARE SUGGESTED. IF CONTACT
IS MADE, FLUSH WITH WATER AND WASH WITH SOAP AND WATER.
ALTHOUGH THE HARDENER IS ONLY MILDLY TOXIC, AVOID INHALING
FUMES BY WORKING IN WELL VENTILATED AREA.
2. SOLVENT CONTAINERS MAY BE UNDER PRESSURE. USE CAUTION
WHEN OPENING. WEAR EYE PROTECTION. IN CASE OF ACCIDENTAL
EXPOSURE, FLUSH WITH PLENTYOF WATER AND SEEK MEDICAL
ATTENTION IF IRRITATION DEVELOPS. USE WITH ADEQUATE
VENTILATION. AVOID BREATHING VAPOR. AVOID CONTACT WITH
SKIN. WASH THOROUGHLY AFTER HANDLING AND BEFORE EATING
OR SMOKING.
D. ADHESIVES:
ALL ADHESIVE AND CURING AGENTS SHALL BE EPDXY.
TYPE AND APPLICATION SHALL BE AS RECOMMENDED BY THE PIPE
MANUFACTURER. ADHESIVES SHALL HAVE U.L. LABEL ANB MUST BE
CERTIFIED FOR PETROLEUM PRODUCTS, ALCOHOLS, AND ALCOHOL/
GASOLINE BLENDS.
E. TESTING
3"- 6" SECONDARY CONTAINMENT PIPING CAN BE PRESSURE TESTED BY INSTALLING
AN IN -LINE TEE WITH A PRESSURE GAUGE IN THE 3/4" OUTLET OF A TERMINATION
FITTING. THIS TEST PIPING MAY BE'PERMANENTLY INSTALLED AND USED FOR FUTURE
SYSTEM TESTS OR AS AN OUTLET FOR PRESSURE OR LEAK DETECTION DEVICES. IF
THE TEST PIPING IS TO BE INSTALLED TEMPORARILY, USE CARE NOT TO OVERTIGHTEN
WHEN INSTALLING THE PIPE THREADS. FIBERGLASS THREADS
MAY BE DAMAGED DURING REMOVAL IF OVERTIGHTENED.
PIPING MANUFACTURERS RECOMMENDED TESTING 3"-6" SECONDARY
CONTAINMENT PIPING SYSTEMS WITH AIR AT PRESSURES UP TO 10
PSIG. THE MOST CONVENIENT PLACE TO INTRODUCE AIR FOR THE
CONTAINMENT PIPING PRESSURE TEST IS AT THE BULK STORAGE
TANK. IT IS ADVANTAGEOUS TO LEAVE THE SYSTEM PRESSURIZED
UNTIL THE INSTALLATION IS COMPLETE IN ORDER TO MONITOR FOR
POSSIBLE DAMAGE DURING ADDITIONAL CONSTRUCTION. THE LOW
PRESSURE AND LOW VOLUME OF SECONDARY CONTAINMENT PIPING
SYSTEMS MAKE THIS AIR TEST A SAFE PROCEDURE IF NORMAL
SAFETY PROCEDURES ARE FOLLOWED.
TERMINATION FITTINGS
TERMINATION AT THE BULK TANK CONNECTIONS IS ACCOMPLISHED
BY USING A TERMINATION CONCENTRIC REDUCER WITH 3/4"
FEMALE NPT THREADED OUTLET.
TERMINATION AT THE DISPENSER MAY BE ACCOMPLISHED WITH A
GASOLINE RESISTANT BOOT, CLAMPED AND BONDED IN PLACE, OR BY
USING A TERMINATION CONCENTRIC REDUCER.
