BY. `"` DAATKINS TE: &21-15 Line Circuit Breaker Types Magnetic Trip The magnetic trip features an electromagnet in series with the load contacts and a moveable armature to activate the trip mechanism. When a sudden and excessive current such as a short circuit occurs, the electromagnet attracts the armature resulting in an instantaneous trip (UL 1077 circuit breakers). Thermal Magnetic Trip Thermal magnetic trip contains a thermal portion with a bimetallic strip that reacts to the heat produced from the load current. Excessive current causes it to bend sufficiently to trip the mechanism. The trip delay is dependant on the duration and excess of the overload current. Elements are factory - calibrated. A combination of both thermal and magnetic features allows a delayed trip on an overload and an instantaneous trip on a short circuit condition. These line circuit breakers use electronic controls and miniature current transformers to monitor electrical currents and trip when preset limits are exceeded. Electronic with Ground Fault Trip The ground fault trip feature is referred to as LSIG in this document Models with L.SIG compare curentflow in phase and neutral lines, and trip when current unbalance exists. Ground fault trip units are an integral part of the circuit breaker and are not available as field -installable kilts. The ground fault ❑ Alarm Switch pickup switch sets the current level at which the circuit breaker will trip after the ground fault delay. Ground fault pickup values are based on circuit breaker sensor plug only and not on the rating plug multiplier. Changing the rating plug multiplier has no effect on the ground fault pickup values. Most molded -case circuit breakers are 80% rated devices. An 80% rated circuit breaker can only be applied at 80% of its rating for continuous loads as defined by NFPA70. Circuit conductors used with 80% rated circuit breakers are required to be rated for 100% of the circuit breaker's rating. The 80% rated circuit breakers are typically at a lower cost than the 100% rated circuit breaker but load growth is limited. 100% Rated Circuit Breaker Applications where all UL and NEC restrictions are met can use 100% rated circuit breakers where 100% rated circuits can carry 100% of the circuit breaker and conductor current rating. The 100% rated circuit breakers are typically at a higher cost than the 80% rated circuit breaker but have load growth possibilities. When applying 100% rated circuit breakers, comply with the various restrictions including UL Standard 489 and NEC Section 210. If any of the 100% rated circuit breaker restrictions are not met, the circuit breaker becomes an 80% rated circuit breaker. Line Circuit Breaker The alarm switch indicates that the circuit breaker is in a tripped position caused by an overload, short circuit, ground fault, the operation of the shunt trip, an undervoltage trip, or the push -to - trip pushbutton. The alarm resets when the circuit breaker is reset ❑ Auxiliary Contacts These switches send a signal indicating whether the main circuit breaker contacts are in the open or closed position. ❑ Breaker Separators (350-2250 kW) Provides adequate clearance between breaker circuits. ❑ Bus Bars ❑ Lockout Devil This field -installable manually operated t accommodate three in the OFF position ❑ Neutral Lugs Various neutral lug: cable sizes for conn (a Overcurrent' The overcurrent tril tripped due to over to the deenergized ❑X APPROVED ❑ RESUBMIT ❑ APPROVED AS NOTED NOT APPROVED EVpIEW OF THIS SHOP DRAWING IS UMITED TO CONFORMANCE WI i\ DFSI NCQWITH I NCEFj OFgJHE PROItRAcr PANS AND S EOR CIFICATIO NN-C4{1IDING UPPLE MENTAL $PECIAL,eRRQQ}}''IISII NS), AND IS N i€NIfE@W4@K ris k&iRatbF qf ll'Stl41Li L REQUIRED WRIAICake/SilEalil PttaCI IDOJAt OWIEW SHALL NOT BELIE edlookuumdm W ocklOTeszbGaBlbreakekTAlLs OF DESK IIpp,11EN TONS, JOB CONDMONS, CONSTRUCTION MEANS AND MEMO, OORDINATION WITH OTHER TRADES, OR ANY OTHER REQUIREMEF IF THE PLANS, SPECIFICATIONS OR CONTRACT. A bus bar kit is provided on the right side of the unit when no circuit breaker is ordered. Bus bars are also available in combination with circuit breakers or other bus bars on the opposite side of the junction box. On medium voltage (3.3 kV and above) units, a bus bar kit is standard. ❑ Field Connection Barrier Provides installer wiring isolation from factory connections. ❑ Ground Fault Annunciation A relay contact for customer connection indicates a ground fault condition and is part of a ground fault alarm. case that, when momentarily energized trom a remote source activates the trip mechanism. This feature allows the circuit breaker to be tripped by customer -selected faults such as alternator overload or overspeed. The circuit breaker must be reset locally after being tripped. Tripping has priority over manual or motor operator closing. ❑ Shunt Trip Wiring Connects the shunt trip to the generator set controller. ❑ Undervoltage Trip, 12 VDC or 24 VDC The undervoltage trips the circuit breaker when the control voltage drops below the preset threshold of 35%-70% of the rated voltage. H- and J-frame circuit breakers are available with either thermal -magnetic or Micrologicn'i electronic trip units. L-frame circuit breakers are available with Micrologic electronic trip unit. H- and J-frame circuit breakers with thermal -magnetic trip units contain individual thermal (overload) and instantaneous (short circuit) sensing elements in each pole. The amperage ratings of the thermal trip elements are calibrated at 104OF (40°C) free air ambient temperature. Per the National Electric Code® (NEC®) and the Canadian Electrical Code, standard circuit breakers may only be applied continuously at up to 80% of their rating. Circuit breakers rated for 100% operation are available but require specially -designed enclosures, copper lugs, and 194°F (90°C) rated wire. Devices with the Micrologic electronic trip unit provide adjustable protection settings for greater system flexibility. In addition to electronic protection, Micrologic trip units allow users to monitor both energy and power. Through direct access to in-depth information and networking using open protocols, PowerPact circuit breakers with Micrologic trip units let operators optimize the management of their electrical installations. Far more than a circuit breaker, these circuit breakers are a measurement and communication tool ready to meet energy -efficiency needs through optimized power requirements, increased energy availability, and improved installation management. Applications PowerPact H-, J-, and L-frame circuit breakers offer high performance and a wide range of interchangeable trip units to protect most applications. Electronic trip units provide highly accurate protection with wide setting ranges and can integrate measurement, metering and communication functions. The thermal imaging effect comes into play if a current '® above the long-time delay pickup value exists SO for a time and then is cleared by the tripping of ® a downstream device or the circuit breaker ® itself. A subsequent overload will cause the „® circuit breaker to trip in a shorter time than normal. The amount of time delay reduction is inverse to the amount of time that has elapsed since the previous overload.
