Dear Ms: Odonnell: GFA International, Inc. {GFA) has.the geotechnical exploration.forrthe above referenced project.: Our scope of services was completed in general accordance with GFA Proposal .No. 20-8924.00 REV#1 dated February 26, 2020, planned • in conjunction with and authorized by the Sands -on the Ocean Condominium Association. Backaround Information GFA understands that a new spa was recently constructed :adjacent to the north end of the existing pool at the referenced facility. The spa is supported by,fqur (4) helical pile foundations installed by _Ram Jack. Foundation Solutions. The. helical piles were designed by MBV Engineering, Inc, for a 15- kip allowable (30-kip ultimate) capacity. Field Exploration GFA performed a field .exploration on March 4, 2020. One (1) Standard Penetration Test (SPT) boring (121=1), advanced to a depth of approximately 25 feet below the existing ground -surface, was. performed adjacent to the spa.The general location of the boring is illustrated on the.'.attached -Test Location -Plan. The Standard: Penetration Tests were performed in substantial accordance with ASTM D 1586, "Penetration Test and Split -Barrel Sampling of Soils." The SPT test procedure consists of driving a 1.4-inch I.D. split -barrel sampler into the soil profile using a 140=pound hammer falling 30 inches. The number of blows ,per foot, for the second and third 6-inch increment, is referred to as the N-value. The N-value has been empirically correlated with various soil orooerties and provides an indication of sou-screngm. The upper 4 feet of the boring was advanced by hand augering due to. potential buried 'utility line. : conflicts. This portion of the boring, was performed in substantial accordance with ASTM D 1452, "Practice for Soil Investigation and Sampling by Auger Borings." Hand Cone Penetrometer (HCP). tests were conducted at one -foot depth intervals in the auger borings. The HCP test; .in, conjunction • with information about the soil type, is empirically correlated to the relative density of subsurface soils; 607 NW Commodity Cove. '.www.teamgfa.com OFFICES THROUGHOUT FLORIDA - " Sands on the Ocean Spa 3100 North A1A, Hutchinson Island, Florida GFA Project No. 20-8924.00 Subsurface Soil and Groundwater Conditions Report of Geotechnical Exploration March 10, 2020 Page.2 The boring log resulting from our field exploration is attached as the Log of Boring record for B-1. The log contains the soil descriptions, the standard penetration test (SPT) N-values, and the hand cone penetrometer (HCP) values logged during the drilling and sampling activities. Note that the soil boring data. reflect information from the specific test location only and soil conditions may vary between the strata interfaces indicated on the log. The soil classifications and descriptions shown on the log are generally based upon visual characterizations of the recovered samples using the Unified Soil Classification System. The soils encountered in the boring generally consisted of loose to medium dense fine sand (SP) and fine sand with silt (SP=SM) to the boring termination depth. As an exception, a layer of very loose silty fine sand (SM) was present from a depth of approximately 18.5 to 23.5 feet. On the date of our field exploration (March 4, 2020), groundwater was encountered in boring B-1 at a depth of approximate 7.1 feet below the existing ground surface. Note that the groundwater table will fluctuate seasonally depending upon local rainfall and other site specific and/or local factors, including tidal influences from the adjacent Atlantic Ocean. Discussion GFA has been provided with the attached helical pile installation report prepared by Ram Jack Foundation Solutions. This report indicates that four (4) helical piles were installed and each pile achieved an allowable capacity of 20.7 kips (41.4 kips ultimate): Note that this exceeds the 15-kip allowable (30-kip ultimate) design capacity for the helical piles established by MBV Engineering, Inc. Considering this information and the results of boring B-1, it is GFA's opinion that the helical piles are an appropriate foundation configuration for the spa. Closure .This report has been prepared for the exclusive use of the Sands on the Ocean Condominium Association and members of the design team for the referenced project. This report has been prepared in accordance with generally accepted local geotechnical engineering practices; no other warranty is expressed or implied. The information presented in this at the location indicated on the variations which may occur aw subsurface conditions at its local subsurface soils within the region soil types shown on the borinq loc report is based on the data obtained from the soil boring performed attached Test Location Plan. This report does not reflect any ay from the boring. While the boring is representative of the ion and for its vertical reach, local variations characteristic of the are anticipated and may be encountered.
