SECTION FOUR
"BATTENS" - -
The line of the batten is.also the line of the tile, so the batten
must be installed properly.
Much work can be saved by using a correct layout. This can
be achieved very simply. First, analyze the area to be roofed
dividing it into segments made necessary by offsets in the
roof, headwalls, openings in the roof, ridges, etc. Next, install
the key batten strips that divide these segments such as the
eave course batten, ridge batten, headwall batten, or roof
opening batten. Then, proceed to divide these segments into
equal courses, chalk line these courses and install the battens.
Each roof has different criteria, but in most cases the roof can
be divided into courses all about the same size where no
horizontal cutting is necessary.

Avery important rule to follow in roof layout is do not stretch
2t .maximum course spacing. If the roof divides over the 131/2"
:k maximum spacing, add a course to get back down under 13 1/2"
maximum spacing.

BATTEN: Shall be min. 1 " x 2" pressure treated.
LENGTH: For pitches below 6/12 use 4' battens.
For pitches 6/12 up use maximum 8' battens.
SPACING BETWEEN BATTENS: 1/2" width between
adjoining battens.
FASTEr ERS: The battens shall be attached with 6D com-
mon galvanized steel nails spaced 12" o.c.
DOUBLE BATTENS "PREFERRED METHOD"
In a double batten system vertical battens are run 24" o.c.
maximum under the horizontal battens.
This preferred system design improves ventilation, and allows
moisture to drain freely.
This system when used in conjuction with the venticap system
is considered the cadillac of file application technology. Use
8D non- corrosive nails to fasten tile.
SINGLE BATTENS
The single batten system is a less expensive system of
installation. Care should be taken when installing horizontal
J battens to limit the length of battens to 4' below 6/12 pitch,
and to maintain proper spacing between adjoining battens to
allow for moisture drainage.

To insure the uniform spacing of file necessary foroptimum appearance:
allow desired overhang.
2. Measure from chalk line to 1 " from center of ridge or exposed face
of ridge board.
3. In the spacing guide, find the figure nearest this measurement for the
lap range required. EXAMPLE: If the distance from chalk line to
ridge is 10' 10" this figure appears in the column headed 13",
indicating that the distance between chalk line and ridge can be
divided into 13" increments.
4. Mark both ends of roof into increment size indicated. (To maintain
3" overlap, course spacing must not exceed 13 1/2').
,, 5. Snap chalk lines across roof at course markings.
6. Nail top of battens or sheathing boards to chalk lines.
7. Make any necessary adjustments overthe 6 courses closest to ridge.

Requirements:
1. Masonry walls separating enclosed parking from carports shall be continuous from the floor
to the underside of roof deck.
2. Though not required, I suggest a single draft stop attached to one side of the trusses,
midpoint of the carports. Draft stop material may be of 1/2" plywood or Gypsum
board. The draft stop need not be taped or finished with drywall compound.
3. Provide a 2A-10BC rated fire extinguisher for each unit. Suggest they be mounted in
glass front cabinets. Maximum travel distance is 75'.

This letter is to advise that these doors were tested in a pressure/vacuum chamber providing a
typical garage door installation in an opening provided for each.
The pressures/vacuums indicated on the drawings were generated under the supervision of the
undersign who witnessed and recorded the results.
The pressures/vacuums used for the tests correspond to those required by the Standard Building
Code for the wind speeds indicated as applied to buildings according to Code requirements,
Section 1205.
