APPROVED APPLICATIONS:
Deck Type 1 Concrete Decks
Deck Description: Min. 2500 psi
System Types F(1): GacoFlex Coating System for Pedestrian Decks (GW-14-U)
Substrate Preparation: Surfaces must be thoroughly dry to ensure adhesion for all primers and coatings except
those designed for moist surfaces. Remove dirt or dust that settles on surfaces before start
of work or between coats. Sweeping or blowing may be sufficient, however, washing or
damp -mopping is considered the best procedure.
Wipe up grease or oil with a solvent and absorbent sweeping material. Wash with solvent -
alkaline cleaners diluted one part cleaner and five parts water. Rinse thoroughly with clean
water. If evidence of oil film remains as indicated by water
"beading," etch surface with 10% solution muriatic acid. Agitate etch with stiff bristle
broom; then rinse with clean water. Remove curing compounds by etching with 10%
muriatic acid and sweeping, followed by clean water rinse. Allow to thoroughly dry before
applying coating.
Any residual traces of asphalt stains must be sealed with Gaco Western's E-5320 Primer to
avoid staining of light colored tope coats. Apply sealer in two coats and allow a minimum
of 48 hours cure time.
Primer: Prime entire deck surface and all vertical or sloping surfaces of curbs, cants, parapets, etc.,
which are to receive coatings with one coat GacoFlex U-5677 Sealer at a rate of one gallon
per 300 square feet (3.78 L / 27.9 m2). Allow drying a minimum of I hour and no more
than 24 hours before applying GacoFlex E-5320.
Apply one coat of GacoFlex E-5320 by roller at the rate of one gallon per 250 square feet
(3.78 L / 23.2 m2). Allow 3 to 24 hours drying time.
Base Coat: Apply one coat of GacoFlex UB-64 Series Polyurethane at a rate of 1.25 gallons per 100
sq. 8 (4.73 L / 9.3 m2), (20 mils wet (.51 m)) to all areas to receive fluid applied
waterproofing, including areas previously caulked, flashed or fabric reinforced. Allow the
base coat to cure completely (8 hours minimum at 70°F (21 °C)).
Intermediate Coat: Apply GacoFlex UB-64 polyurethane by roller to secure a minimum coverage of one gallon
per 100 square feet (3.78 L / 9.3 m2). (Total wet film thickness - 16 mils (Al mm)). While
coating is still wet, broadcast GacoShell granule at approximately 6 to 8 pounds per 100 sq.
ft. (2.7 kg to 3.6 kg / 9.3 m2)(one gallon (3.78 L) dry volume). Coat and sprinkle small
areas at a time, taking care not to overlap coating and granule at edges. When texture coat
is cured enough to walk on, lightly sweep away loose GacoShell' granule. If GacoShell gets
wet from rain allow 2 days of drying weather before proceeding with finish coat.
NOA No.: 13-0805.09
Expiration Date: 11/14/18
Approval Date: 11/14/13
Top Coat: Apply GacoFlex U-66 polyurethane by roller in a coat of the desired color over the granule
at the minimum rate of 1 gallon per 100 square feet (3.78 L / 9.3 m2). The GacoShell
granule must be totally encapsulated by this finish coat. (Total wet film thickness -16 mils
(Al mm)). Allow 48 hours before deck is put into use. In cool temperatures, a longer
curing time may be required.
Integrity Test: Required, and shall be performed in accordance with ASTM D 5957 by an approved lab.
Water maybe maintained for a period longer than 24 hours if required.
Inspection: Verify that the structure can support the deadload weight of a watertight test before
proceeding. The integrity of the cured membrane on a horizontal surface may be verified
by damming the entire area and flooding with water to a minimum depth of 2" and
allowing the water to stand for 24-48 hours. Visually inspect the bottom surface to check
for any water penetration.
