We understand due to the high water table and the depth of footings for the canopy the footing
subgrade has become heavily saturated. Because of this, the performance of standard density
tests for the bottom of foundations of the canopy footings is not possible. Due to the time it may
take to effectively drain/dry the soils at the bottom of foundations, we recommend that within the
footing limits, at least 12 inches of soil be excavated and replaced with Department of
Transportation (DOT) number 57 stone or equivalent. The stone should be uniform in size and
that mixing of different materials should not be performed.
Once the stone has been placed, a small vibratory compactor should compact the stone in place
to ensure that the placed stone is tightly packed in the bottom of footings. During the
performance of this some localized dewatering may be necessary in order to properly prepare the
site for construction. Prior to any placement of concrete, the footing area must be relatively dry
with no standing water.
Upon completion the stone will be the equivalent of compacted footing subgrade, for only that
thickness of soils which were removed and replaced with No. 57 stone.
A representative of Nutting Engineers must observe the placed stone in order to confirm
the thickness of the stone layer and that proper compaction has been performed per our
recommendations prior to placement of concrete.
