Re: Ocean Resorts — Retaining Wall Footer

KSM Project #: 190553-wc
Dear Mr. Dunlap:
As requested, KSM Engineering & Testing has performed a subsurface investigation for
the referenced project. The investigation was performed in accordance with generally
accepted soil and foundation engineering practices and Section 1800 of the latest
Florida Building Code. The purpose of this investigation was to evaluate the near
surface soils with respect to the proposed project and to estimate the allowable bearing
pressure of the soil.
The site investigation program consisted of performing one (1) dynamic cone
penetration test boring from existing grade to a depth of 7 feet. In addition, two (2)
hand auger borings were performed to inspect the consistency of the subsurface soils.
During the portable dynamic penetrometer test, a 35 lb. (16 kg) safety hammer is lifted
and allowed to fall 15 in. (38 centimeters). Hammer blows are counted by the operator
for each 10 centimeters of penetration with the counting facilitated by scribes spaced at
10 centimeters on each 1 meter long rod. Blows per 10 centimeter of penetration,
dynamic cone resistance and equivalent SPT 'N' values are measured and shown on
the attached logs. Please refer to the soil boring logs for specific information relative to
the soil description.
Based on the information obtained from this site investigation, we are pleased to offer
the following evaluation:
Dynamic Cone Penetrometer readings recorded during the investigation indicates that
the existing soil density is too loose to be considered satisfactory for the project. The
soils can support the proposed retaining wall so long as our 'site preparation
recommendations are followed.

Foundation:
Based on the existing soil conditions, it is our professional opinion, that the proposed
structure can be supported on conventional concrete, steel reinforced footings designed
for an allowable soil bearing pressure of 2,000 pounds per square foot, or less provided
that the site is properly prepared as recommended below.
Site Preparation:
In the footings, the disturbed footing subgrade should be recompacted to 95 percent
(minimum) of its modified dry Proctor value. This can be best achieved by using a
"jumping jack" compactor. This will tighten the top 3 feet of the very loose soils.
Closure:
This report has been prepared in accordance with generally accepted soil and
foundation engineering practices based on the results of the test borings and the
assumed loading conditions. No warranties, either expressed or implied, are intended
or made. This report does not reflect any variations which may occur between the
borings. If variations appear evident during the course of construction, it would be
necessary to re-evaluate the recommendations of this project.
Environmental conditions, wetland delineation, water quality, and municipal
requirements are not a part of this report.
