8. GROUNDING
t. WARNING
ELECTRICAL HAZARD - The grounding rod must be installed before the PTS is
installed. Make sure the PTS is grounded before turning up power.
The customer is responsible for providing and installing a ground rod. When
installing the ground rod, keep the following in mind:
• Minimum standard grounding configuration is one point. For other grounding
configurations, consult local building codes.
• All materials must be UL approved and meet NEC codes. The ground rod
should be copper, 8 feet (2.4 m) long and %-inch (1.6 cm) in diameter.

2.2.8 Alarms - The following alarms are available:

The wiring for the Generator Retrieve alarm is indicated on the wiring diagram
posted on the inside of the MTS door. Wiring diagrams are shown in Fig. 49 on
page 39 and Fig. 50 on page 40. For information on the alarm in the ATS, see the
ATS controller equipment documentation.
Note: Alarm wiring is not provided and is installed by the customer as
required. Alarm wiring can be run out of the bottom of the enclosure.
The alarm cable must be suitable for this purpose and must be rated
at 600 V.
2.2.9 Doors and Locking Mechanisms - The doors of the MTS/ATS cabinets are
secured by three-point latches, each of which also has a provision for a padlock
(shown in Fig. 3). The latch is opened as shown. in Fig. 4. Wind latches (shown in
Fig. 5) secure each door in an open position.

2.3 The Manual Transfer Switch (MTS) Cabinet
2.3.1 MTS Cabinet Features - The specific features of the MTS cabinet include:
! a door with a three-point latch with provision for a padlock;
• two main breakers with a mechanical interlock (slide -bar) transfer device,
• a 24-position Square D Type QO load center,
• an isolated neutral assembly,
• a portable generator inlet,
• a ground bar,
• two alarm relays with breakers,

2.3.2 Generator Inlet - Portable generator power must be connected through the
generator inlet mounted on the right side of the MTS cabinet. (See Fig. 7.)

ate gauge for the load as specified by the National Electric Code (NEC).
2.3.3 Surge Suppressor : For protection from transients and surges, a Transient
Voltage Surge Suppressor (TVSS) is supplied.
2.4 The Optional Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS) Cabinet
2.4.1 ATS Cabinet Features - The specific features of the ATS cabinet include:
• a hinged deadfront panel with wind latch,
• the ATS Controller,
• a main breaker for normal power,

• the ATS Contactor,
