Weight of water displaced: 4,168 lbs. Empty weight of the tank: 976 lbs Buoyancy to overcome: 3,192 tbs. Method No. I Construct a concrete pad with reinforcing bars forming eyes with a plastic coated chain strapping the propane tank to concrete pad: Pad Dimensions: 7 5/8" thick by 48" wide by 120" long: Volume of concrete: 43,920 cu. Inches = 25.41 cu. Ft. = 0.94 cu. Yds. Weight of concrete to o5set buoyancy: 0.94 can. Yds. X 4,050 lbs/cu. Yd = 3,812 lbs. Method No. 2 Construct four tie -down ground anchors (6" augers) at the four corners of the propane tank. Provide double 22 gauge galvanized steel straps at each set of augers (double straps on each end of the tank). Working load on each anchor: 4,109 lbs. Hold down strength of anchors (buoyancy o;ii'set): 4 x 4,109 = 16,436 lbs. Allowable Tension in 22 gauge tie down strap: Area = 0.0336 inches thick x 2 inches wide— 0.0672 square inches P(allowable)=;f(a)A = 20,000(0:0672 sq: in.)-=1;344 lbs: per strap Hold down strength of 4 straps (buoyancy offset): 1,344 ibs x 4 = 5,376 lbs. * Connection for strap to anchor consists of slotted 5/8 inch bolt with 2" galvanized steel strap inserted in slot and wound at least three wraps. * Each strap in each assembly must be wound to equal tension to provide for allowable tension to be -ca ried by both straps. Theworking orking on de -down anchors was trovided by the manufacturrer. Anchors buried in sandy flat woods soil, no snuck. Lakeland Office •,4.705 Old•.Highway 37, P.O. Method No. 1 appears to provide slightly more than neutral buoyancy offset. Method No. 2 appears to provide a factor of safety of 1.68. The weight of the soil above the tank will be the same in each case and has therefore not been taken into consideration in the buoyancy calculations. The estimated 6 inch soil cover win provid6 an additional off -set to the buoyancy of approximately 1,3501bs. If you have any farther questions, pleases do not hesitate to contact this office.
