For the reasons primarily stated in their correspondence to you, I joi~ the St. Lucie CounTy Commission, Ft. Pierce City Commission, City of Port St. Lucie, along with numerous citizens and citizen-based organizations, in opposing the application in its entirety or without substantial rnodification. The citizens of St. Lucie County have been diligent in their efforts to stop any expansion of cargo operations at the port. As stated in their correspondence to you, the elected officials have embraced the will of the citizens by incorporating it into theii Port Master Plan documents, Planning and Zoning criteria and other regulatory guidelines. Governot, this community has taken it upon thernselves to crea.te a vision far its future. That vision is consistent with the one you created for the state; to be a major player in the Bio-Science and Bio-Technology arena, to create a world class Research and Education region and to incorporate protecting our natural Yesaurces in creating a strong economic development euvironment. Frflnkly, that vision DOES NOT include expanded cargo operations at the port. In fact, any cargo expansion would negate the work being done to tealize that vision. The debate to expand or not to expand cargo operations at the port has polarized this community far too long. It is time to move on with initia~ives that unite our community, not continue to divide it.
