LUCIE COUNTY CULTURAL AFFAIRS COUNCIL 600 North Indian River Drive, Fort Pierce Board of Directors General Meeting Minutes Tuesday, January 8, 2008 Members Present: Jacquelene Burke, Vera Mann, Leland Carpenter, Jack Connolly, Jenene Skrupky, Stan Silver, Martha Bradley, Jacquelene Burke, Leland Carpenter, Ruby Jefferson, Ruth McSween, Anna Preston, Roberto Roldan, Elise Rollins. Staff Present: Commissioner Chris Craft, Katherine Smith, Jody Bonet, and Suzanne Antonetti. Guests: Eric Gill, Bill Ward, Linda Henderson, and Adrienne Moore. Meeting called to order by Jack Connolly at 5:30 PM Agenda Item 1: Approval of Minutes : Stan Silver made a motion to have the December 11, 2007 Minutes tabled and condensed into a summary of version from the verbatim version provided. Vera Mann seconded the motion. Motion carried. Complete tapes of the meetings are available for members review in the office. Agenda Item 2: Commissioner Chris Craft was welcomed back as CAC’s county representative. Jenene Skrupky questioned Commissioner Craft regarding the comments of Attorney Heather on art at the St. Lucie International Airport. Explanation given by Jody Bonet that art is allowed at the airport but funding must come from other sources than those of the airport’s capital projects funds. Agenda Item 3: Eric Gill , Public Information Officer for St. Lucie County outlined the press release requirements for events. Newspaper and radio media require information 2 to 3 weeks prior to event. National magazines like AAA require delivery 2 to 3 months in advance. County 21 TV has monthly shows and needs 6-8 months prior to event. Other county media available to CAC are Postcards from Home, Inside Saint Lucie County, OPS capital project, PSA with 30 to 60 second commercials. These medias require at least 1 to 2 months prior to event. County 21 TV Community Calendar required 3 to 4 weeks. www.TCPalm.com’s section called Your Hub allows for posting of photos and stories from anyone and periodically will choose one or more of these stories for publication in the Wednesday Hub. For the printed Scripps newspapers the Monday’s Luminaries Section must be in by the Wednesday prior to publication. Mr. Gill noted that February and March are the toughest time for media coverage because of the number of activities directed at out of state visitors. Holidays, i.e. Christmas, Easter, Thanksgiving, th 4 of July, are ideal times to submit event news and stories with photos to the local media. Mr. Gill notifies via email over 2000+ individuals and organizations of upcoming county events. For more information Mr. Gill handles media for 24 county departments. Agenda Item 4: Director’s Report: Jody Bonet reported that the Historical Museum has received a fresh coat of paint and the Boating and Fishing Heritage Exhibit is nearly complete. Florida Frontier Fest rd is coming up on February 23 and is the same day as Hatittude. Volunteers are needed for both. The Marine Center is being updated. Agenda Item 5: Chairman’s Report : Jack Connolly outlined plans to send out an email report to all committee members containing reports from the director, chairman, individual chairs, and the treasurer on the Tuesday prior to the meeting. The CAC Directors Manual will be distributed at the February board meeting. Jack Connolly requested the members read the provided section on how a meeting should be conducted. Agenda Item 6: Treasurer Report: Stanley Silver announced that an individual has volunteered to help with the QuickBooks program. He requested of the committee that members volunteer to learn the system and assist with checkbook entries into the system in the future. Agenda Item 7: CAC Parade Participation: Jack Connolly announced the Fort Pierce Marti Gras Parade on Saturday, February 2. He stated that CAC signs would be on the trolley along the Jazz Band. CAC volunteers are needed to ride in the car from 1:30 to 3 pm. Jody Bonet announced that there would be a place to sell Hatittude tickets, shirts, and posters and Lucie Award tickets. Agenda Item 8: 1. Art In Public Places: Jody Bonet requested that Joe Holiday be appointed to AIPP Places. The County Commissioners chooses 5 people and CAC chooses 4 people. Jenene Skrupky made a motion to Joe Holiday to be Cultural Affairs Council appointed representative to Art in Public Places. Motion seconded by Vera Mann. Jenene Skrupky gave an overview of Mr. Holiday’s qualifications – Art and All That Jazz, St. Lucie Professional Art League, and recipient of the Lucie Award for lifetime achievement in the arts. The motion carried. 2. Lucy Awards: Sunday February 3 : Jenene Skrupky again requested assistance for advertisers in the Lucie Awards program designed by Ginny Piech Street and asked for donations for the Silent Auction. Jenene Skrupky gave members a letter for them to provide to potential donors for the event. International Harpist Brenda Brundig will be playing again and Anthony Westbury will be the MC for the event. Jack Connolly expressed the importance of members getting the news out about CAC events and emphasizing that St. Lucie County is the place to relocate because of jobs and culture. Commissioner Chris Craft announced that the University of Oregon, Life Sciences division, is putting a new campus here in St. Lucie County bringing over 200 jobs into the area and these are people who bank on having culture in their community. Members requested to sell 5 tickets to the event. 3. Mini Grants: Jenene Skrupky passed out the Mini Grant recipients’ event schedule. She requested CAC members sign up to attend one or more events and look for our banner, note the participation and if there are children’s programs and report to the council. Jenene Skrupky asked if the events were on the CAC website and Jody Bonet reported that it is in the works. 4. Zora Fest: Linda Henderson, Chairperson of Zora Fest reported on the Zora Birthday Party went well with large number children. Would have like better media coverage but had twice the number as the Hatittude, previous year.She also reported on February 23, at IRCC. Tickets are $30 per person and th there will be a fashion show with Jazz music. Zora Fest is on schedule for March 29. Martin Luther King Parade on January 21, Linda Henderson stated that the Zora Committee would have participation with the trolley in the parade and the Zora committee. Jump for the Sun Dancer who might be interested in participating at the Hatittude. Linda Henderson asked about Art In Public Places and the Lincoln Park Plaza getting a statue. Jody Bonet reported that there were still plans for one at the plaza as well as Avenue D. Ms. Henderson updated CAC on the upcoming Lincoln Park workshops and extended an invitation Donations-In-Kind: Jack Connolly explained how the members are to complete the forms documenting volunteer time for the Council. Commissioner Craft explained that if you are being paid by the organization then you should not put down your time. st 1 Annual Treasurer Coast International Film Festival : Jacquelene Burke updated the members on rd the festival, February 1 to 3. Over 100 films makers from around the world submitted films, and 45 will be screened over the weekend. The Opening will be at Riverside Theatre, Vero Beach with Astronaut Edgar Mitchell and showing of The Wonder of It All. . The Closing with be at the Sunrise Theatre with the world premier of the Zora, The Documentary. Information is on www.TCIFilmFestival.com. St. Lucie County and the CAC grant are supporting the event and the event is getting national attention and international. Needs support and volunteers. Roberto Roldan added that Washington Public Broadcast has expressed interest in Zora, The Documentary. Stan Silver made a motion to adjourn. Seconded by Vera Mann. Meeting Adjourned at 7:00 PM
