II.OLD BUSINESS
Call to Artists Updates:
July 1 due date: The Call to Artists has going out via email and in the “Art News” and “Art in
America” publications. Bill Ward reported getting numerous calls from artists and he has told the
artists to submit their proposals for more than one location if they choose to do so. Jody Bonet is
proposing an outline of existing work available from the artists that could be purchased outright and
thus would be a saving for the community.
Jody Bonet updated the committee on the purchases of the 5 sculptures of the WoW2 and Mr. Terry
Thommas’ piece. The purchase of the leased WOW 2 piece will require doing an amendment of the
AiPP ordinance. The committee discussed the sculptures’ purchase by the city and the county
separately. The paperwork that she will be bringing to the county commissioners was discussed and
she will let the committee members know the date and time when the presentation will be made.
The committee discussed the 4 sites and reviewed the pictures of the site plans: Avenue D, Coach
Fenn Center, Clerk of Court and the FP parking garage. The position of the sculpture at the Coach
Fenn Center was again discussed and the placement of the sculpture by the back of the building,
garbage and recycling area. The committee discussed the committee’s right to move sculptures as
needed. The committee chose to place one of the existing WOW 2 pieces in this location until the
full call to artists project was completed.
Bob Hood stated he wanted the entire county to be considered an art gallery. He noted that Jon
Ward designed the FP garage in such as way that the sculpture could be changed out for different
sculpture over the years.
III. NEW BUSINESS
Bill Ward showed the drawing done by Phil Steele and $100,000 donation toward the National UDT
Navy SEAL Museum Memorial. The committee discussed adding the call to artists to the county
website. The committee reviewed the art of R Shifrin who prepared a sketch for the SEAL Museum.
The light project for the South Beach Bridge
The committee discussed the possibility of two artists in the WoW2 Felicia and Valerie about looking
at the bridge as a possible project for them. The committee recommended calling all the artists who
had been interested in doing the project and see what they might come up with. Jack C stated that
the new reconstruction project on the bridge should to be considered as well as the roundabout, the
boat ramp, and park improvements. Bob Hood said noted that it might be best to wait until all the
improvements are done and re-look at that project. T.A. Wyner noted that the view of the boaters
coming into the harbor from the ocean. She stated that the original plans called for neon. The
funding for the bridge and beach improvements is coming from Public Works, FPRA and FDOT.
The bridge is on the next phase of the AiPP projects. The committee will start a file for the lights on
the bridge.
Works of Edwardo Gomez and other artists
The committee discussed places where the art could be shown. The space by Sunrise Theatre and
the office space in the parking garage on the first floor could be a possible solution to show artwork.
The committee discussed the logistics of displaying art space there and the safety of local display in
public buildings like the clerk of court. The committee will speak with the City of Fort Pierce about
a display.
Murals
The committee discussed the disbanded Mural Society and the condition of the current murals. Jack
Connolly expressed concern regarding the ownership of the surface and who will maintain the
existing murals and the fact that the last restoration of the Train mural didn’t appear to be well done.
The committee talked about hearing from Brenda Leigh at an upcoming meeting to discuss
preservation and restoration.
The next meeting the committee will have the 3 artist choices for each location from the
subcommittee, the presentation on the choices for the Seal Museum, and discussion on the
downtown art space.
