The committee was given a spreadsheet identifying their top three priority issues and began work on identifying objectives and recommended actions. The general consensus of the committee was that education is key to a successful energy conservation campaign, and that public-private partnerships were also key. The group wanted to see more education in the mainstream media with a focus on cost savings. Various outlets were identified including a column in the newspaper, loop videos playing in Walmarts, doctor’s offices, etc., education in schools, and PSA’s on television. Commissioner Coward told the group that the County is close to hiring an Energy and Water Manager. The group discussed having this person bring energy-saving ideas to the committee. Commissioner Coward talked about a company that is interested in bringing LED lighting to the County via a performance contract. Linda Bartz thought that the county, cities, school district and utility companies should work together on these energy efficient retrofits. Commissioner Coward shared that if the project was large enough, the company may be interested in moving their operations to St. Lucie County. MOTION: Linda Bartz made a motion to recommend that all local governments and utility providers do an inventory of their current interior and exterior lighting to consider pursuing a joint RFP to retrofit to LED lighting and to promote greater energy efficiency and cost savings. Commissioner Coward seconded the motion, which passed unanimously. The Committee asked staff to invite Larry Pelton, President of the St. Lucie County Economic Development Council to give a presentation at the next meeting about the EDC and its targets and approaches for attracting industry and businesses to the County, with a focus on green industry. MEETING ADJOURNED at 2:39, motion by Eric Winterstein, seconded by John Holt, unanimously approved.
