NEW BUSINESS:
Our scheduled speaker was Mr. Botto He spoke to the group about the negative effects of
fertilizer run-off into the Indian River Lagoon. Mr. Botto made a brief power point
presentation on the topic (copies available upon request).
Mr. Botto presented some statistics on proven effects of phosphorus on algae growth.
Apparently, one pound of excess phosphorus introduced in the Lagoon can help create 500
pounds of algae "blossom".
Mr. Becht suggested that we might invite representatives of one or more fertilizer companies,
the Indian River Citrus League, and/or landscape companies to address our group. (This is
currently being set up; consult the agenda for Feb. 11 when available). The MRC has worked
closely with the legislature on limiting the amount of certain chemicals into the Lagoon;
several counties have their own statutes in place. Additional data is available upon request."
