A ~„y~~ 41 ~"~''~ 42 At the last meeting the Historical Commission members instructed Leslie Olson, Planning 43 Manager to draft a letter for signature in order to follow up with the property owner regarding 44 maintaining the area around the fireplace. Ms. Olson drafted the letter for signature; 45 however, prior to the letter being signed and sent out, Mr. Jeffrey W. Stanley, the property 46 owner contacted Mr. Hayek via email regarding the Commission's past offer to help maintain 47 the site. The owner also informed Mr. Hayek that Ms. Lucille Rights with the St. Lucie 48 County Regional History Center (formally known as the St. Lucie County Historical Museum) 49 contacted him to see if she could remove the fireplace from his property; because, she felt 50 that it would not survive in its current condition and would be better served in the History 51 museum. However, the property owner was vehemently against the removal of the 2013-04-17 Page 1 of 3 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 14 15 16 17 18 19 20 21 22 23 24 25 26 27 28 29 30 31 32 33 34 35 36 37 38 39 40 41 42 43 44 45 46 47 48 49 50 fireplace. Instead, he preferred that the Historical Commission members come to assist his lawn maintenance personnel in the cleanup and preservation of the site until he was able to oversee the maintenance himself. Further discussion ensued, which lead the Commission members to request that Ms. Olson respond to Mr. Stanley's email and coordinate a date for members of the Commission to go out and assist in the maintenance of the site. The board would also like to keep Ms. Rights informed about their efforts and the condition of the fireplace. B. White City Historic District i' "~~'' Mr. Heffelfinger updated the Commission on his meeting with~ttic Wh(e City Improvement Club (WCIC) Board of Directors. He felt that the WCIC ~Bo~rd of directors would be amenable to the idea of establishing a historic district absent of property restrictions. Further discussion ensued on how the Commission rriembe'rs might introduce the idea of a portion of White City becoming a historic district to the stakeholders iri' UVhite City. The following was suggested: ~ ; :~~ ~, • The use of brochures explaining the beneflts'of ~~isf6rid'tiistrict • Surveying the residents of White City in order,4oaget their position on creating a historic district and to identify`tlhe,possible bourid~ries of the district. (The survey would include face to face meeting`s~and/or mail outs ~~ ~ • Holding individual meetings i~{~th ~4~ie members ~of~,~rfhe Board of County Commissioners to see if they woultl'be amehableto the jdea. Vice ChaiY''~ '~ voted to refain Mr. Charles Hayek as Chairman and Mr. ~n of the Hist`d~Yical Commission. and / or Staff Sarah Smith, Historical" Commission Secretary gave a brief presentation about a workshop she attended in Sanford Florida. The workshop was on historic preservation and the advahtages of becoming a Certified Local Government (CLG). Sarah's presentation included information on the following topics: • The benefits of becoming a CLG • Repairing old wood (Materials that can be used for the process) • Preservation of old bricks (Proper way to remove mortar from old bricks and different ways to relay them) • Stripping and repairing old window sashes 2013-04-17 Page 2 of 3 1 ANNOUNCEMENTS 2 3 None 4 5 Next meeting date: June 18, 2013 at 4:00 PM 6 7 8 The meeting adjourned at 5:10 PM. 2013-04-17 Page 3 of 3
