UPDATE by fLC fherriff'f Office- Major'iighe on behalf of fheriff Ma:cara~
Major Tighe reported the inmate population range from 1200 to 1250. The "At Risks"
population has gone down and the 55 years plus has gone up 73% in one year. He gave some
examples of the costly medical care some of the elderly population need likte: dialysis 3 times a
weekz, pace makters, an internal morphine pump refilled monthly, not including additional
medications for the same individuals.
Major Tighe mentioned that the psychotropic medication cost has gone down because the
medications became available in a generic form. On the other hand, HIV medications have
gone up because they Izeep changing the formula and introducing new drugs each year.
Martz Godwin indicated that some people did not respond to certain types of the HIV
medication so they had to try other forms of it. Mr. Godwin recalled the December invoice for
15 inmates to be about $50,000 and the month before about the same cost for fewer inmates.
Major Tighe said that there was a study done a few years ago about Aids medications and
how the cost was predicted to go up. He recalled the county hiring an independent source at
that time to see if the medications can be bought elsewhere cheaper. It was determined that
Corizon, the company that was being used, was the cheapest in the country because they
have their own pharmacy. He concluded his report by saying they are doing everything they
can to Izeep costs down.
