I hope this letter finds you and the gardens doing well.
On behalf of the Tourist Development Council (TDC), it is requested that Heathcote Botanical Gardens
provide an update following the addition of the James J: Smith Bonsai Gallery since its grand opening in
May 2011. As you may recall, St. Lucie County and Heathcote Botanical Gardens entered into a grant
agreement. providing $148,720 of tourist tax funds in an effort to help fund the construction of the
bonsai gallery.
The TDC is Interested in learning more about the economic benefits that the gallery has brought to the
gardens and the area. A formal update in writing can be sent to 2000 Virginia Avenue, Fort Pierce,
Florida 34982 to my attention or an update can be formally presented at the Tourist Development
Council meeting on October 8, 2014. The time and location of the meeting is to be determined.

Thank you for choosing Heathcote Botanical Gardens as a grant recipient in 2011 for the
Tourist Development Council grant in the amount of $148,720. We truly appreciate
your support of the James J. Smith Bonsai Gallery at Heathcote Botanical Gardens. The
$148,720 from the grant was used to construct a world -class display garden for the
coveted James J. Smith Bonsai Collection. To date, the gallery has been noted as one of
the top three bonsai galleries in the United States! In addition, the James J. Smith
Bonsai Gallery is the largest public sub -tropical display of bonsai, by one bonsai artist,
in the United States.
Below are bullets reflecting the impact and outcomes generated from the bonsai gallery,
which would not have been possible without the grant. You helped 'Make the difference
through choosing Heathcote as a recipient of the Tourist Development Council Grant.
➢ The bonsai gallery continues to provide a unique cultural experience for local
and state residents, as well as people from all parts of the world.
➢ Almost 43,000 people, from all over the world, have visited Heathcote since
the opening of the Bonsai Gallery in 2011.
➢ Over the past year, there have been several visits from international bonsai
masters, such as Ben Oki from Japan,
➢ Tourists from across Florida and all parts of the world have visited Heathcote
Botanical Gardens over the past few years. Many stay in the area, which
increases revenue for restaurants, hotels, and other organizations located in
Fort Pierce.
➢ Over the past thee years, visitors from 8 other countries (Alaska, Canada,
France, Guyana, Hong Kong, Puerto Rico, Japan, and Scotland) visited
Heathcote.
➢ Since 2011 we have received $62,000.00 in revenues from our annual Bonsai
Ball.
➢ Since:the opening of the Bonsai Gallery we have had visitors from over 30
states, including Florida experienced Heathcote Botanical Gardens. These
states included: Indiana, Illinois, Iowa; Georgia, Delaware, Alabama,
Connecticut, West Virginia, Wisconsin, Vermont, Virginia, Texas, South
Carolina, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Colorado, California, Arizona,
Kentucky, Massachusetts, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, New 'York, New
Jersey, New Hampshire, Nebraska, Missouri, Oregon, and Florida.
➢ Many weddings, receptions, book signings and other celebrations have taken
place in the bonsai gallery.
➢ Heathcote will continue to attract visitors from all parts of the world as
awareness increases regarding the bonsai gallery.
It is our goal to continue to enhance the bonsai gallery and generate revenue to help
sustain this precious gem..

On behalf of the Tourist Development Council (TDC), it is requested that the National Navy SEAL
Museum provide an update on the status of its $1.5 million expansion project to construct and expand a
portion of its interior exhibits. Beginning on November 15; 2013, St, Lucie County. and the National Navy
SEAL Museum entered into a grant agreement allocating $250,000 of tourist tax funds in an effort to.
help fund the expansion.
The TDC is interested in learning more about the finalized scope of the project and the projected
economic benefits it will bring to the museum and the area. A formal update in writing can be sent to

Gallery provide an update on the status of its 4,500 square foot expansion project. As per the grant
agreement between St. Lucie County. and the A.E. Backus Museum & Gallery, St.. Lucie County has
pledged futuremonies..to be paid in..monthly installments beginning. on October 1, 2015 for aAntal
amount of $400,000 over a term of five years.
The TDC is. interested in learning more about your efforts to pursue additional funding from private
sources, the finalized scope of the project and the projected economic benefits 'it will bring to the
museum and the area. A formal update in writing can be sent to 2000 Virginia Avenue, Fort Pierce,
