November 21, 1990 Page 5 Petition: American Legion File No.: RZ-90-41 COMMENTS The American Legion Post 171 is requesting that its zoning be changed to I (Institutional) in order to allow for the expansion of the existing building. Prior to 1984, civic organ/z ati OhS were permi tied us es under the z chi ng classification that existed at that time. Under the County, s comprehensive rezoning of ! 984, this and the surrounding properties were rezoned to RS-4, the existing designation. Currently this use is legally nonconforming under the existing RS-4 zoning designation and in order to allow for this facility to be expanded, the property must be rezoned (Institutional). to I The expansion of this facility will not result in any adverse impacts in this area. The purpose of this expansion is to create a separate meeting room at that location. There will not be any increases in activity on this site. The building is located in an area that is not highly traveled and the surrounding land uses are compatible with this use. Staff recommends that you forward this petition to the Board of County Commissioners with a recommendation of approval. If you have any questions on this matter, please let us know. Chisholm, County Administrato: St. Lucie County County Administration Building Annex 2300 Virginia Avenue Fort Pierce, Florida 34982 RE: Fee Waiver Request Dear Mr. Chisholm: We, the Officers and Members of American Legion Post ~171, are asking you and the St. Lucie County Commissioners to please waive the fee of a zoning change request by our organization. ~ Our organization received permission and built our present building in 1983 At that time the zoning allowed the construction. Recently, we applied for a permit to enlarge/expand our building and were told that the zoning had been changed since 1984. This was done without our knowledge and we were unaware that this change had occurred. Our organization is a service organization to the community and realizes very little income from our operation. The cost of the requested zoning change and the cost of seeking a variance before the Board of Adjustment, which we have been told will be necessary, have led us to ask for a waiver of the zoning request fee. A member of our organization will gladly appear before you and the Commissi on this request. We would appreciate any help you and the Commissioners can give in this re- gard.
