Pierce city limits and easu of the intercostal channel as a SLOW SPEED zone from the shore line to within 100' of the channel. The Department first made Ehis recommendation to the county after our firs~ review of the county's proposal last spring. Based on U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service aerial survey data this area has large concentrations of manatees year round. There have also been three!990. documented wauercraft caused manatee deaths in this area in 2. Standardize the width of the SLOW SPEED shoreline buffer 600'. The currenu proposal is to have a 300' buffer in some area and 600' buffer in others~ A 600' buffer county-wide would provide uniformity, simplify signage, and would increase rea! proEection of the manatees with little if any inconvenience to the boating public. I~ takes approximately I minute to travel 600~ a~ slow speed. Those sites which the committee has recommended as exempt from the SLOW SPEED buffer for water sports (e. g.
